Oil leak from lower unit

My boat has been sitting for the last month, no time to get out, have a inboard mercruser 165. noticed it leaking gear oil from lower unit, guess I have a seal that is done. is this somthing I can do myself, or should I just get it done by somone with expirience. if so can anyone recomend a place or persone..thanks

Are you sure it is lower unit? It could just be some exhaust gas fluid leaking out after usage. If your motor was tilted down it can leak out. Try tilting the motor up and see if you get any more fluid. If it leaks in the up position I would first check to see if the washer on the drain hole is in good shape and the screw is tight enough....larry

This is the second time I have noticed it, first time I thought of that, so this time I left it up, I replaced the oil, new drain screw and seal. and still I have a small puddle of oil, seams to be comming out from a small water drain hole at the bottom of the lower unit..??

It sounds like you should have it checked by a marine mechanic at this point...larry
