Big screen GPS

I am upgrading the GPS on my boat. I want to go to colour and a bigger screen because my eyes aren't like they used to be. I have looked at the Humminbird 987c, the Garmin 3010c and the Lowrance 7600c. I have never used any of these products. Presently I have a b/w Bottomline 5300. I would appreciate any comments or information from fishermen who might know these units. Are there any detailed maps of Eastern Ontario waters The Trent and Rideau Systems as well as some other lakes In Haliburton and the Valley. I hope you can help me.

Hello AA,

I run the Lowrance GlobalMap 7600 HD and it is a great unit. The Lowrance units have never failed me and they take a real pounding while being exposed to some rough conditions when fishing big water and tournaments. The screen is huge (10.4") and easy to read in any lighting condition or rough seas.

The Lowrance unit is easily updated with SD cards and system updates downloaded from the Lowrance website and their Canadian customer support is outstanding.

The 7600 HD unit comes with NauticPath mapping data for all the Great Lakes installed on the hard drive, the mapping data covers the US and Canadian waters of the Great Lakes. For the Rideau, Trent, Ottawa and St. Lawrence system you will need to purchase the Navionics Eastern Canada SD Mapping Chip. The only inland lake map data available is on the Navionics HotMaps Canada. You will want to visit the Navionics site to see if the lakes you are looking for are on the SD chip before purchasing.

You can visit the Lowrance site and download a software emulator and manual of the GlobalMap 7600. This emulator will let you explore the features.

Noticed this morning that the Lowrance 7600C HD is on a close-out sale ($1049 in lieu of $2299 USD) at Jolly Ann Marine and Outdoor - see http://www.jollyannsales.com/GPS/lowran ... 00c_hd.htm

I forgot to mention new for 2007 is a few units that are between the large 10.4 " and the smaller 7" screens.

The GlobalMap 8300 HD, 8200, LCX-38 HD and LCX- 37 have a 8.4" screen with the same resolution of the 10.4" units at 600 V x 800 H pixels .

I am so tempted to pick up an 8" of 10" unit for this season but besides the price tag of $1,500+, I just cannot justify buying another GPS until I master the iFinder I bought a few months ago.
