Hey guys. This will be the first season I have to restart my motor after having been winterized. I was planning on getting some of those muffs that fit over the intake and starting her on land. How long can you run them while not actually in the water? How long do you need to run them before all the fogging oil is burned off? Any comments, input you can provide would be appreciated.

you put the muffs on the lower unit and hook it up to garden hose.. you can run it for whatever period time, dont recommend you run it on high RPMS constantly. Its recommended to run it on idle speed while on muffs. its basically is to check if its running and go through diagnostics, tune up etc...

You will know when the fogging is burnt off! You will be able to see more then 10 feet! You can run your motor for as long as it takes with the muffs on and the water running....for my 20hp Yamaha, the fogging usually burns off in about 10 minutes! Brampton Mike

There are certain outboards that dont like running on muffs, they just dont seem to pickup water properly. 20hp Johnson is one that comes to mind, just make sure that you get an almost immediate flow of water out of your tell tale hose when you start it and that it continues to flow well as it is runnung

My 15 Merc will not take the ear muffs, I have a big plastic container that I fill up with water and I just drop the lower unit into it. The fogging oil usually burns off within 5-10 minutes. I'll guarantee you that you will not have a mosquito anywhere near you when you do it.

By the way - do the $10 muffs at Canadian Tire work ok? They seem to have two types ... the $10 cheepy and then another about $20. The more expensive set supplies water to both sides of the muff whereas I think the less expensive one only supplies a single side.

Not recommended to do on a sunny sunday, at suppertime....
Seriously, I use a rubber bungee cord to secure the muff. since the motor tends to "buck" a bit at first.

no need to go in gear so leave the prop on, assuming you did take it off in the fall and ceck for line wrapped on it
