We first installed the transducer for my new Lowrance. Then we got crazy. I mentioned to him I would like to make the top I had thrown together last year a bit better. So Clown being the creative guy with knowledge that he is, came up with an elaborate plan.
We decided to go and buy a bunch of copper tubing and build a removable and stowable frame and use the boat canvas cover as the top and industrial clear plastic for windows.
Sounds easy enough. Well not that easy but doable. My budget was 100 bones.
We began by inserting two thicker supports for the main columns at the rear, I used existing rod holder brackets to slide the poles in and it works great.
Once we had the main supports in place, Clown began making the rear support for the top. He took one pole and attached it to the copper t-brackets on each end of the main supports. He soldered these so they wont slide off. He also installed lock pins so when everything is together they wont fall like a house of cards.
Once the rear of the frame was up it was time to start the side frames. Cut a pole to size then attach an copper elbow then cut another tube, secure end of tube to the front cleat with an I bolt he installed in the poles and voila plenty of holding power. It is secured and wont lift.
After this, we added two top supports coming towards the front walk through to give the top more support and to the front angled portion of the canvas as well. To these we added a center brace so it would be sturdy.
I decided instead of a tarp, I would use the existing boat cover, I HATE THE STUPID SNAPS. Since I cant stand the snapping system to attach it to the boat and it is really not all that secure.
We pulled the cover over and decide how much to use and cut the excess off leaving enough extra in case we screwed up.
I have pics up until the canvas, this is the only part we are not finished yet. Partially because we have not decide the best method of attaching it to the frame around the the windshield . I think we are going to try strong velcro first and see if it will hold, if not, well I guess its back to the drawing board. We are also going to add a couple of industrial plastic windows in the canvas in front above the windshield.
Once she is complete I will post a pic of the final product.
Soon I will be fishing in comfort.
The inspiration for this endevour is the past 3 May long weekends of rain, snow, hail and cold. And not to mention fishing on Quinte in the fall.
Here are the pics, hopefully in order.
The copper poles, soon to be a frame:

First up the main supports:

Next, the rear top support to the rear main supports

Now onto the side rail frame supports

Hope to show you all the completed product soon and to try it out on the water.

Oh ya came in over budget by about 10 bucks, not bad if you ask me. Beats the 1200 dollar cost of getting one made and thats a conservative price. This will do just fine, hopefully. Otherwise I will have some copper scrap for sale.

Take care
Badger
