Hi Joco, it sounds like something electrical is failing, but unfortunately these kind of problems are hard to find, sometimes they fail only when they warm up. You may have to use a timing light and see if you lose spark when it quits on you.

:D joco sometimes it's better to bring it in because maybe this problem has been seen before like in 1989 when the motor was first bulit. Some of them have a problem with the stop switch not working properly or there were also the ones thats shut off from erratic spark setting off the SLOW warning for overheat, but you would never know that because very few readers have owned let alone have seen 30 or more of these engines, I have. :D
So keep trying to figure it out for yourself and maybe next year after you to take it to a shop. :D

I would try the obvious things first. then maybe a trip to the docters wouldent be a bad idea.

It sounds like the coil pack is starting to fail. but maybe a new set of spark plugs will solve it.

Id put my money of the coil pack.

Consider trying another fuel tank. I had crack in the fuel uptake hose of the gas can one time. Slow speed allowed normal running but full trotle would bring on a problem when the gas in the can reached below the crack. It acted weird because the problem was so inconsistant until it got really bad. Good luck

Hi Joco

Check the fuel line, there may be a small air leak.
We used to have an old 9.9 evinrude that would run like a top at idle and most times at full throttle.
It would all of a sudden start to slow down/speed up, and eventually it would cut out at full throttle then easily restart but never on idle or 1/2 throttle.,

It turned out to be the line inside the tank had developed a small hole. As the tank level lowered it would start to suck a little air.

Jocko,
I also agree with the fuel line and bulb combo. If these parts are not recent replace them they are cheap. That will give you a baseline to start troubleshooting the problem.
years ago i had the same symptoms and the line and bulb fixed it....larry

Thanks guys.....

I don't know if any of this helped Joco or not but I know it helped me.

Was having issues keeping the engine running on the weekend. I won't go into detail but needless to say when I went to the back the bulb was soft.... vent open, check, hum what is that... its was the fuel like. It appears the seal around were it connects to the fuel tank the o-rings was wore out.

Grabbed a new fuel line up and running 100%. Now I'm just going to get a replacement end for the old fuel line and keep it as a backup.

While sitting out on the water I got to thinking about these posts and sure enough the trouble shooting tips worked.
