Transom Savers. Yes or No and the reasons why.

Hi Everyone,

I am considering getting a transom saver for my Lund wc 14. I have a 15.hp. 4 stroke on the back and it gives me the willies watching the pounding it takes on Ontario's roadways. The back of the boat extends about a foot beyond the cross member on the trailer. So, I will probably need one with an extension that can angle upwards.

Can you guys suggest any particular type or brand of saver?
Am I going for overkill with the saver?
What has been your experience using them.
Where did you get yours?

As always, thanks for the help.

Im not sure if you can use one with smaller motors. Most models that i have seen require weight and power trim to keep the motor from bouncing off.

I have one on my 115 and it was worth the $85 for it. once I lower the power trim onto the saver it can not come off. there is a small rubber cord that fits around the motor also.

having said that. I dont see why you couldent find a way to use one. maybe a ratchet type strap would keep everything tight.

Even better why not take a ratchet strap run it from the trailer up around the motor and back to the trailer. You would need to have the motor tilted up to do this. But im sure it will keep your motor down tight and not allow it to jump around.

I dont think the weight of a 15 hp motor will do any harm to your boat. my last boat was a 25hp and I never had a problem.

I have a small 7.5 HP Merc and I just use a cheap ratchet strap back to the trailer and it works well. I put on the strap with the motor down.

Using a ratchet strap works fine, but the real feature of a transom saver is it takes all the weight and stress from bouncing around and transfering it to the trailer instead, the ratchet only keeps things tight and takes no stress off the transom, they do make a model that ratchets out the pole, not sure where i saw it advertised though, if i find it again i'll post it for you. I am a firm beleiver of them and use one myself . but everyone is different and have there own opinions on this subject. good luck
