Hey all,
I got a 1980 evinrude 9.9 HP. Got a couple problems with it.
First of all, it takes 10-15(if not more) pulls to start it when it's not hot. Then, it runs fine, a bit noisy but I guess that's because its old.. but the problem is that when the motor is running, at high speed or low speed, it will randomly just stop, the whole engine just stops. Then, takes another 10-15 pulls to start it
Anyone know what is the problem?
Thanks

It could be a fuel problem.
The fuel tank's filter might clogged or the air valve in the cap is closed.
You may have an air leak in the line causing the prime to be lost.
Have you checked the prime bulb to see if it is firm?
Sometimes the conecter end to the motor gets old & leaks there.

I agree. It sounds like a fuel problem. How old is the gas tank? How old is the fuel hose?

Nodie,
You did not say if you had the choke on with the cold start. You should and you should also have primed the bulb[till it gets hard]. Al;so check to make sure you have good contact at the spark plug connection.
If you are still having problems the fuel tank, filter, primer bulb, and hose should be checked or replaced. If this dosen't correct the problem a carburetor rebuild should be your next check.....Larry

I agree only maybe some seafome could be run throught the system before tearing the carb apart.
I'm still thinking the carb is running out of gas.So fuel line or conector issues need to be resolved.
The big ? is .... is it holding a prime when it dies??
Is the bulb still hard???
