Hey Joco,

Follow the heater hoses and you should find a valve in the hose near the firewall Sometimes they seize up or the cable controlling it is no good. Run the engine untill the thermostat opens, feel the hose before and after the valve and see if they are the same temprature. If so feel the return hose from the heater core. If the valve is good and warm on both sides and the return is cold, then the heater core may be blocked. This can be corrected sometimes by backflushing the heater core with a garden hose.

Cheers,

Rick

I had something similar with my car, sort of.

My heater knob has 5 settings and on settings one and two, no heat. I had to use settings three and above and it wasn't very strong.

Brought it in to the dealer and they replaced the heater resistor, $34 part.

$45 for labour. :?

I have a 1996 Dakota with the same engine and a few years ago had no heat on a -35C day. It was the heater resistor.

And I only know one person who's Chevy or Ford truck has lasted as long as mine.....

Hi joco. I didn't do the work but I was standing there while the mechanic was poking about. If I recall, it was located along the top of the firewall on the passenger side and was easily accessible. It took 5 minutes to replace.

hey Joco...this might be able to help you. Think you can download the service manual in PDF form here:

(there are other years there as well)
