Loose Steering - 1993 40 hp Mariner

I have a 40hp Mariner with the cable steering.

The steering is loose and when I let the steering wheel go, the wheel turns off.

I've checked the motor for a nut to tighten the steering the same as a tiller but I cannot find one.

Any Ideas.

My steering wheel has a cap in the middle that you can pop off.....there is a lock nut there on the steering shaft I know if i tighten that it will tighten up my steering.

Do you mean that when you are under power if you let the wheel go the boat steers to one side?

Yes sir that's exactly what happens. When I had a tiller motor there was a screw to to tighten the steering, but I cannot find one on this motor.

I tried that before and it already seems quite tight but I'll give it another crack.

Thanks, WF

Hey WF there will not be a screw. The props cavitation pulls the motor and the wheel to one side. You can help to correct this byadjusting the little fin on the gear case (behind the prop on cavitation plate. You can usually adjust it right or left 10 degrees. Just loose the bolt at the top of the gear case and turn opposite of the way the motor goes to when you release the wheel.

Thanks JP

I will try that tonight. I was away for a bit and could not get on to the site until today.

Thanks again, WF
