motor kicks out of gear

I have a 94 30hp evinrude. The last couple times out at full throttle it would seem to kick out of gear....kind of reminded me of a spun prop. I tried a couple different props but it didnt make a difference. It would only happen for a couple tenths of a second rev up and then start pushing again. Anyone ever have this problem? Any suggestions??

King fisher,
Are you talking about a sheer pin? If so I dont have one. Thanks for the heads up though and I do know what you are talking about because I have had a few of those break in my day....

Hey,

He mentioned that the motor kicks back into gear, all the shear pin is, is a
sacrificial piece of metal on smaller outboards to prevent the prop from destroying itself if it gets hung up. Once it shears of it accentually desables the prop from the engine, its got nothing to with the F/ N/ R.

Orrsey, You tried checking the oil levels?

2 things to check::
- maybe need to adjust the shift cable on the motor side.
- also check the oil in the lower unit, maybe low or may have water in it..replace if required.

thanks for all the responses guys. Last week I changed to oil in the lower end and the old oil looked pretty good. Took it out and still kicking out of gear. I then tightened the shift cable and seemed to stay in gear.....we'll see if it keeps up but hopefully its good to go now.
thanks again.
