I've got an old (1976 I believe) Peterborough 14' run-about with a 76 50hp merc. It has the old clothes line steering system. Thinking about upgrading. Is it possible and if so what would you guys recommend. I can get more specific info (model and serials) if needed. Was thinking about looking for a deal at the Toronto boat show. Or are their any used systems available? Also is there such thing as a boat scrap yard. You know like an auto wreckers but for boats? Thanks for any info. Mike

you should be able to get a baseplate for the motor controls, from an old merc. parts, engine, with all the hookups for throttle and cable (tele flex) style steering,in fact,I didn't think Merc. still had that steer system in the mid 70's,and you can get an older merc. control box for about $50-75 with cables and a key. you will need a new steering wheel control box as well, but yep,it is not a hard project, better to buy an old boat w/out a motor for a few hundred bux,to get all the stuff you need in one shot, then find the motor base plate.

I think you just wanna upgrade the steering, right??
Get yourself a "Ride-Guide" or "Tele-Flex" cable system.
Try searching the archives on here, someone was tryin' to sell one a while back.
Not sure but you may hafta replace the steering
'column', for lack of a better word.
I have a 14' Thundercraft that has the system in it, including the 'column', that I'd be willing to part out.
Just hafta wait 'til the snow buggers off to get at it!

Thanks for the replies. Ya I'm just looking to upgrade the steering. I may be interested in what you have problem is I'm in the Toronto area but maybe we can work something out. how much a lookin for it. Is it a teleflex or another manufacturer. Was thinking I'd like to change the steering wheel too. Aside from being a safer system is there a noticable difference in control vs the clothes line?

I'll hafta go take a look, not sure what 'brand' it is.
Much quicker 'response' versus the 'clothes-line' system, also much shorter 'pole-to-pole', 'post-to-post'

(not sure what the proper term is??)
