Is this decent oil?

i my self would just use the regular 2 stroke oil as you should go easy on that motor. That oil won"t help with performace. If it has been re-built than go ahead with synthenic oil . cheers terry

I have been using Shell Nautilus TCW-3 in my outboard for many years with no complaints.

the important thing is to have the perfect mix for your engin.

some say 50 / 1 but isnt the case in all 2 strokes

mine is a 82 johnson sea horse and im putting 60/1

marine guys suggest syntech oil.

maybe just a gimik but then again since iv switch and reduced the oil.

i have no more residue comming out of my exaust system!

but it all comes down to how much you love your engin!

for me its supreme gas and syntech in all small engins no matter what.

I was given some OMC Oil (The company that makes johnson/evinrude) and it was blue, just like the Amsoil brand.
The evinrude website did mention that their "oil supplier" used blue dyes

Q - Why are your TCW-3 oils different colors?

A - Our oil comes from different suppliers. Each uses a different dye (for identification purposes), but the oils are formulated exactly the same.


Q - What is the fuel/oil mix for my motor?

A - The following is generally true: 1958 and prior used 20:1, 1959 thru 1963 used 24:1, 1964 and newer use 50:1. High performance usage (racing) requires a ratio of 25:1. New engine break-in (not DI) requires 25:1.

I don't mind paying more for synthetic, as long as it works fine and smokes less.

Looks like you should be using 50:1 ratio.

I dont know if it makes a difference or not (probably not) but it says that its injector oil. I usually get mine from a marina, pay $20 for a big jug of evinrude/johnson oil. It seems to work good and smoke less.

I have used Amsoil for a few years not just in my marine engine.

Since my evinrude is oil injected I use the HP injector.

The last two years I've been using Lucas oil for my 25 Evinrude mix along with gas stabilizer in every fill up. My motor has never run better. The stabilizer keeps the carbs clean and the Lucas oil is smoke free.
I use this in all my two strokes now: auger, whipper snipper, chain saw, etc.
I highly recommend it. You can get it at Canadian Tire.

Very interesting and informative post. I am curious to know if oil will lose some of its properties or effectiveness if it is remains unused in the oil tank of the boat over the summer and also over the winter. Any thoughts?

I have been using Shell PWC oil in my 25hp Johnson circa 1980 and have seen a big difference.

zarbat007: Yes you can use that synthetic oil in your motor, but basically you are wasting your money, buy the stuff billy bones suggested. In your motor it wont make any difference or will you see any improvement in performance.

Most of the oils out there with some fancy name or additives or synthetic are made for newer high performance highly tuned engines, an older small hp 2 stroke engine does not need all the fancy new oils stuff

The only real preference here is the smell of the smoke and the cost....for your application.

If you do decide to switch from regular 2 stroke oil to synthetic you should run your tank (whether pe-mix or injected) as low as possible and then add the synthetic oil.

Any oil marked as injector oil can also be used for premix and no it does not go bad or settle out over a winter in storage. I have oil here that has been on the shelf for 5 years that i used in all my 2 stroke engines, just give it a shake and use it.
