outboard motor

Post by bigted99 »

unfortunatly i puchased an aps 5hp motor to use for trolling on a 12ft aluninium boat but it will not idle down far enough to troll slow enough does anyone know if there is a small trolling plate available or have an idea other than a drift sock ?

You should be able to get the idle speed on that 5HP down to a crawl...did you take the cowling off and adjust the idle setting????

:D This is the problem with small 4 strokes, will not idle low enough.

If you get them to idle to low they will seize from lack of lubrication not enough oil pressure due to low rpm. oil pump runs off crank.

Buy a 2 stroke or buy a drift sock, no other choice.

It's physics, in order to get it to run slow you need gas and it won't suck in enough gas and air to run lower than 1200 rpm, I don't care what you do with it. And if you do get it to slower usually it will rattle on the transom of the boat so much it will be annoying.

The other problem is getting them to run smoothly at idle especially a single cylinder engine

Great reply... I'll think about that when I look for my first outboard.
