Another trolling motor query

Post by Bass Seeker »

I'm considering a 55 lb bow mount trolling motor for a Duranautic open 16' mod V. Total weight will be about 1200 lbs. Do you guys think 55 lbs is adequate?
Thanks

That depends on the type of water your fishing. Fast water you should upsize, back lakes would be fine but with the higher lb your not limited to current or gusty winds. You might also consider the size of battery and space required for different lbs trolling motors. Take time and consider your options when purchasing trolling motors.

Thanks and yes both of your answers are pretty much what I expected. More is always better, at least with TM power, I suppose I was looking for excuses to save the $$ between a 55 and 70+, not to mention the cost of an additional battery. I fish a lot of small, protected lakes but occasionally get on a big one. My frugal side says one thing and my common sense says another and I really need to avoid making this mistake. If I get the 55 I suspect I'll be buying the 70 down the road and in the long run will have spent more. You know though, the manufacturer websites are misleading, well at least not thorough in their selection guides, Minn Kota for example recommending a 50 - 55 for my size boat, but with no thought to weight, etc. Of course I suppose it's easier to convince people to buy a less costly product.
Thanks
Mike

I have a 55lb Minn Kota on a "big" 14ft boat, its a tonne of power most times, but as mentioned in winds, current, or vegetation, it comes in handy, two guys and gear I'm only 700lbs loaded

Trolling motor power

Hi

I would make two recommendations. Get at least a 70lb. thrust, 24 volt system and if you can afford it an onboard charger. The 24 volt system will mean a lot more time fishing and less time charging. the difference in price and weight is more than compensated for by the convenience of longer times between charges.
