removing oil filter on a merc 25 4-s ?

We picked up a new 2006 25hp 4 stroke last year . Good motor so far and have no complaints except the oil change . We have bought 3 different tools to try to get at the filter as it is buried . The cap style unit fits the filter fine but the motor housing prevents getting it on to the filter . So we end up using big channel locks and crushing it and then use the old "drive a screwdriver in it" to remove ! Is there something we are missing here ? I can't believe it can be this difficult , there must be some tool that merc dealers use that we don't know about ? Looking at it today it is a stupid design for something that needs regular replacement . Or we are idiots ?

did you try the strap type tool. usually it works in tight spots

There are fittings available that attach to the top of oil filters the dimpled edge on top that have a fitting for a ratchet that makes the job a breeze!
I think princess auto has them.

I have a 40 f-s Merc and i use channel lockes but i just loosen it and then put the new one on hand tight

I have changed many of those filters . Alot of them are way over torqued . The best tool I have used for that application is the ratchet style that clamps down as you turn. There just isnt much room for anything else !
With that being said, I have had a few that still did not come off so i punched a large flat head screwdriver through and through and used that to turn it .
I would check what the merc dealer says but I have always put them on a hair past hand tight.

Yup had a 30 hp couldn't even get a strap type around it. Flat head screw driver!
