My boat is always in the water at the cottage. This last weekend, I turned on the sonar (Humminbird 718) and got a message "transducer not connected". So I look over the transom to see if it's still there. It's there alright, but it's missing about ten inches of transducer cable. Something ate the cable from the transducer puck to the mooring cover.
Ok, what lives in the water and eats wire? I dunno. Second, am I going to have to buy another replacement transducer ($80) or can somebody rewire it? And lastly, how do I prevent this critter from doing it again?
This will be the third time I have replaced a transducer. The first two were sheared off when I hit something.

I had a muskrat eat the wire from the trim sending unit on my motor.

Generally you should have enough slack to pull back and splice the cable if there is enough left at the transducer end. Best is solder and shrink sleeve but crimp connectors and shrink should work. May have to install a metal casing over your cable to protect it for future or remove your transducer when docking. Make sure you reconnect all wires including any braided bare shield wires.

Suggestions. Keep, if possible, your transducer (cable included) out of the water when not in use.

Thanks for the advice. Nothing left of the wire at the transducer. Since it's a sealed unit, I'm assuming there's no way to get inside to rewire.

Anybody have any ideas about a removable transducer installation? Something durable, reliable, and easy to work. No wood or C clamps.

get 12 inchs of garden hose and cut down one side and slide it over your wire that should do it i hope
