Tie Bar for kicker

Hi
This summer I installed a kicker mount - the cantilever type. Works great, I now want to add a tie bar so I can steer with the main motor.
When the steering rod for the main motor moves, it is about 12" total stroke (+6 one way, -6 other way), because is is quite close to the main motor pivot point. It seems that the tie-bar will have to mount same distance from the pivot point on the kicker as on the main motor, to get the same angle of steering as the main motor.
However, due to the kicker bracket, the kicker pivot point is quite a bit further back than the main motor pivot. So the tie-bar will not be parallel to the transom.
I'm considering putting the tie-bar from the back of the main motor instead of mounting to the steering rod.
Anyone have any ideas on how this is best approached?
