Minn Kota 55 All Terrain and Anchor Winch Problem

Post by sandman »

This is my fist post in quite a while although I do read the forums often.......

I've got a problem with my trolling motor and winch which I thought might be a fuse issue, I'm not technically inclined when it comes to this stuff. Both connected to a new deep cycle battery and the fuse appears to be intact, but neither will work........ battery is fully charged. I replaced the deep cycle battery this past weekend as as the original was showing as being bad on my recharger. The problem is driving me nuts...... Is there anyone out there that can steer me in the right direction to try to fix the problem?

Thanks.......

Being not so inclined in these matters myself, I know how frustrating they can be...the first things I would check are:

- connections are correct? (pos to pos...neg to neg)
- if you only hook up one of them at a time, does either work?

Even though the fuse appears to look good, it may not be. Get an automotive 12 volt tester and check for power, or at least a continuity tester to check the fuse. Or replace the fuse anyway, at the least you will have a spare.

Sometimes a bit of corrosion builds up on the battery posts, or the contacts. I have a bit of buildup from last year and have to fiddle with the connections to get the trolling motor working. I need to clean them and add dielectric grease to the posts. Also the contacts for the fuse can corrode a bit, cleaning those can help.
