This July I'll be rebuilding my '81 Johnson 15hp. I would like to pick up a parts motor to help keep my costs down, Johnson or Evenrudes (OMC) are fine.
This will be a learning rebuild for me - never worked on outboards past replacing water pumps and cleaning out carbs. I know it needs to have the reed valves replaced, and I also know I'm opening up a potential can of worms once I start taking it apart.
Compatibility-wise, I think I should be ok with engines in the 79' - 86' range....please correct me if I'm wrong. I know the 'newer' engines ('87 and up) share many of the same parts as well.
My lower unit is newer, good seals and pump in it. I'm more concerned with the powerhead, carb, fuel pump, throttle etc on the top end.
Once I get into it I'll post pics and updates as I progress along. Any hints, tips and general help is greatly appreciated.
I will purchase as-is, where-is and don't mind driving a bit to pick it up.
Tight lines,
Chris

Thanks for the advice!
I'm going to order a carb kit and a head gasket ahead of time, maybe take a trip out to AIM...
