Back from Papineau Labelle

Post by Wall-I-Guy »

Well what a few days off this was. Started off on a tremendously sour note when one of the group that was supposed to join us cancelled with a day to go. His Nephew was killed in a head on collision down east. Not only his nephew but, his hunting, fishing buddy on his annual trips down east as well. Very sad tradgedy.

So now there was just 2 of us to make the trek unfortunately. Still turned out ok considering. The fishing was not the best I've seen in my roughly 20 years heading to the park.

The Brookies were not cooperating at all on Lac Joinville. We managed to get some over the 4 days but just not enough to say it was great fishing on Joinville.

The Lakers were not too bad, fairly active but still quiet compared to normal. Here's a picture of one of the first few fish we caught. A nice Laker in at about a pound. The biggest Lakers was about 2 pounds.

Image

Great eating too, we did manage to eat a pile, and I mean a pile :!:  Man were they deeeeelicious

About 6 years ago we were trolling this lake when my buddy gets a fish on, seems like it was going to be a huge Laker or Brookie. Were we disappointed when he reeled in about a 2-3 pound Sucker  We didn't even know they were in the lake. Likely from individuals bringing in minnows no doubt :!: :x

Anyway, as we were trolling around one morning, we see some commotion on the surface in the distance. Of course we have to go investigate, only to find this

Image

....another Sucker, this one 3-4 pounds, probably dying of old age. :!: :x Grrrrrrrrrrr :!: Beautiful lakes like this with these things in 'em....Holy crap :!:

Well since the Brookies weren't cooperating on the main lake, we decided to try the secondary lake, Lac Cecile. Well holy bites Batman they were very cooperative there. We managed 15 the first half day in there. No great sizes but certainly nice and edible.

After another less than fruitful experience on Joinville for the day, we decide to hit Cecile again the following morning. We managed 17 this morning with this beauty coming in at 1-1/2 pounds. very nice indeed. The photo may not show it, but it was one chunky monkey :!:

Image

The rain was constant the whole trip virtually. That doesn't even register with me when the fish are biting though. Here's some of the local wildlife that kept us company.
Image

Not to mention the beavers, moose, deer, herons and muskrat that kept an eye on us. With so much dampness and rain, the camera remained in the cabin for most unfortunately.

We figure we caught in the neighborhood of 35 Brookies and 20 Lakers...Not bad, but not as good as it should've been. Then there's next year. And considering no 2 pound brookies, which we usually get a few of...oh well :!:  We still left with our limits without a problem. 10 Specks and 2 Lakers each.

We'll likely be looking for a couple individuals for next years trip. It's a great place folks, only cabin on the Lake...ask Tomcat...Pure heaven.

Relatively cheap considering the fish too. Drop me a PM if you think you might be interested...Please only PM if you're serious :!: It runs Monday from 17:00 to Friday 13:00. We'll be looking at the last week of May or first week of June time frame.

In closing, I think the hot spell really knocked the crap out of them. The Park Wardens said we did better than all the groups who checked out before us...whew :!:   So next year we're going when we'd normally go, which is a week or two earlier :!:

WIG:

Glad to hear that you enjoyed your trip into the Park. I guess we'll have to ensure we take a walk into the secondary lake. I can hope too that the cooler weather will start to have a positive impact on the brookies in Joinville. Regardless, we're still excited at the thought of our 4 nights in there. We'll be six this year.

Great looking trip Wig. The scenery alone is worth it for sure.

To get some nice specks like that makes it purely heaven.

Nice outing Wall-I-Guy nice fish and nice sceanery as well. Been in that park never fish but went there four wheeling.

Is it near Notre Dame du Laus? My uncle got a cottage near the park in Notre Dame du Laus at Lac Serpent is it in that area you went. Very nice area down there and the wildlife is spectacular. On lac Serpent theres laker smallmouth bass and pike. Then theres a little lake called green lake stock with rainbow trout. Are you familliar with that area.

I think you'll have a blast Jay,

I really believe it was the hot spell that did 'em in. Hopefully they'll be biting like mad for you :!: Looking forward to your report :!:
