Back from the Grand

Post by bobfly »

Just got back from Stratford and fishing the Grand River. That's part of the deal. She gets to see plays (with me too) and I get to fish the Grand both before and after. Got 4 browns: 3 on pheasant tail and one on BWO dry. I only fish the lower Grand because it is such the river is so much prettier and accessible with my motorhome. Once I figure how to post pictures, I'll take some.

I'll be looking forward to those pics.
The Grand is a real gem in SW ontario.
Can you disclose the area you were fishing in?

Congrats on the great trip

I've fished the Grand a dozen times or more. The browns are between Shand dam at Bellwood Lake and downstream about 15 miles. More in the spring and less in summer. Thats about 40-50 miles from Stratford.

gravelguy4,
I am more than happy to disclose where I fish on the Grand. The last two bridges just south of Inverhaugh are the best access points (or at least easiest). The first bridge is closed and has a great site for camping only the Grand River Conservation now has control over it and doesn't want anyone camping there anymore. We always stay there during the day and then move to the second bridge which was just recently opened up again. Either side of the closed bridge is good and a little further upstream. You have to have the right fly on the Grand. I once walked under the bridge catching nothing for a couple of hours. A couple of guys came after me and couldn't keep them off their lines. They had a fly box to kill for. The second and last bridge is where we camp and I usually go upstream about a half kilometer in the AM to the rapids and fish just downstream from there. There is a hole in there and that is where I get my "big ones". Good luck if you go there. Its a great river to fish because you can walk right across it and cast from the middle and not get caught up.
