ice hut heater - suggestions

Pikeie has built a portable 3 man hut for the soon to be here hard water.
Looking to pick up a small heater .Something that could be safely used in the close quarters for a 7' x 3 1/2' hut .
Prefer something with heater separate from the tank connected via hose.
Any suggestion ( good and bad!)

Hey Tinbanger,

In my opinion, the Mr. Heaters are your best bang for the buck. I've got the Portable Mr. Buddy - two settings (4,000 and 9,000 BTU's), carbon monoxide sensor that will shut the unit off when the levels become dangerous, automatic shut off if tipped over, etc. Great unit, and keeps my two man HT portable nice and warm.

You can also move up to the Big Buddy, offering 4,000, 9,000 and 18,000 BTU settings. Both units will take either a 1lb propane canister, or can be hooked up to a BBQ propane tank.

Stay away from the Black Cat and some of the Coleman heaters. Many are underpowered, and do not provide enough heat, even for a one man portable.

Just my 2-cents.

P.S. got my Portable Mr. Heater from BPS in the States - ordered online for a little over $100.

I own the Heater Buddy it has two settings 4000 or 9000 btu. It also has an oxygen sensor where it will shut down if it detects there is not enough oxygen. You can buy an adaptor hose that will allow you to set up propane outside. I know Princess auto had them on sale last year for $119.99 plus tax. I remember being very cold with my 3000 btu Black Cat on the -25 degree days the first year I had my hut and my hut is aproximatley the same size as yours. Good Luck, Ciscoekid.

Would any of you owner's of the "buddy" be able to tell me the dimensions of it? Also how long would it run at 9000 btu on a 1 lb canister? Thanks in advance.

Hey tinbanger,

I got the Buddy heater from the Toobinator last year and love most things about it.

The only draw back is that if there is a draft i.e. from a door opening and closing the pilot light easily blows out and you will have to relight the unit.

Until someone make a better unit it is hard to beat.

With regards to it blowing out a lot. if you go to iceshanty.com, there is a post there from MAC, who contacted the makers, and they sent him a little mietal cover, which he says saves a lot of the blow-outs...

Something to look into anyways.

I have a little catalytic type tent heater that uses the little disposable propane bottles. It did a beautiful job of heating up my little 2-man shack. I think I paid $75 for it at Crappy Tire. Money well spent.

Big-O told me that the Coleman Procat is excellent and doesn't have the problem of blowing out that the portable buddy has. I asked for the Procat for Xmas so if anyone else out there has one, can you post a reply and let me know your opinion!

The coleman unit is limited to only 3000 btu's in case that is a concern for the colder days.
