Catching Ling in the Ottawa.

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Nobody I know seems to be really targeting these elusive tasty criters, maybe we could market them, call them CRISPY CRITERS. The saying you can't judge a book by it's cover goes a long way here, if Ling had pretty little pink spots on them they would probably be out of season right now because everyone would be after them. Some of the best fights threw the ice I have had have been Ling, they can really bulldog if you get a big one. I seem to catch more Ling around mid to late February. Wecome aboard JAWS, we will have to get out real soon. P.S How was the Ling you guys caught? Ciscoekid....

:D They taste good..just like catfish when ya turn them into hush puppies. And any fish tastes good smoked..even carp! Ling seem to hit in the dark..most likely around during open water but would be down deep where we dont target them on bottom. Ice fishing we seem to start a foot off bottom and play around from there. :)

LING

Post by Bruin »

The first ling (alien) I ever caught was on Hart Lake, north of Echo Bay...
It was about 3 feet long...Neither myself or the parties (ers) I was fishing with had ever seen one...SO, after it died, frozen to my tip up, we threw it in the back of the truck and headed for the local trading post...
When I asked a few locals, not only did they tell me what it was, but offered to barter pickerel fillets for it     :D .... We declined, got some cleaning instructions and headed back to the camp...
After we filletted it, all we did was crush croutons...dropped it in hot oil....
and we ate it....I would definitely say it is a very good eat, and once it is cleaned, it doesn't look so ugly.
