Hi everyone, I will be trying out 2 new different technics/baits that I have heard so much about but have not tried yet. I need some advice on rigging and hook size;
Questions:
1.
I will try "Senkos" for the very first time and I wanted to used them so that they are weedless instead of wacky style. what I want to know is; "When rigging them weedless/Texas style should I use a bullet head sinker or just rig them with the hook texas style with absolutely no weight at all?
2.
Last October I purchased 'Ugly Otters" but did not try them yet, what is the best way to rig these babies
1. You can rig the senkos weightless, texas, wacky, carolina etc. etc. I guess it all depends on where the fish are and the type of cover you are fishing. I was rigging them wacky most of the time on the opener which is probably one of the best ways for good hook-ups but get hung up in the weeds alot. I then switch to texas rigged without the weight which worked really well for the thick weeds. But if the fish are hold closer to the bottom of the weeds I would throw a bullet weight on. I guess it is really up to the conditions and personal preference.
2. I bought some of those ugly otters as well this year. I have yet to catch anything with them but I think they would work well on a flipping jig or just plan old texas rigged.
Rig your senkos texas like you said. As they get chewed up you can rig them from the other end. Finally, as long as it isn't torn up too bad, you can rig it wacky, which is straight through the middle with the hook exposed. I like to use a Falcon 3/0 weighted hook with my senkos, they fall a bit quicker and are easier to keep in contact with when there is a breeze. You can use a small bullet weight, but you will miss out on the baits natural action that way.
As far as the otter, rig it texas with a bullet weight just like a craw or a worm.
I use an Owner 4/0 J hook to rig my Ugly Otters with a 1/4 ooz rattling gambler weight pegged. I have had success with them swimming them or flipping into weeds, or a combonation of both.
As mentioned before "wacky" rigging is deadly, maybe to much so! I've switched to using circle hooks when I rig wacky, cuts down on the "gut hooks" if you don't get a quick hook set. I've never seen a bait that fish will swallow as quickly.
