Appleton River strikes Oil

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

I have fished appleton for more than twenty years, this is not good news but the river can clean it's self very well, does anyone remember the PCB oil fire there about ten years ago at the same place. the oil slick only took a couple of months to clear, I never eat the fish from appleton but it is a great place to fish.

Hopefully they can find the owner of the property, whether its a holding company or not and get them to pay for the clean up. By law that should have removed the oil and the tanks. One of the reasons that I hate working on Oil furnaces!

The owner of the land is our local mayor...He is offering to do whatever it takes to clean this up...not sure if that is a politician talking or a concerned resident. The Almonte fire dept. who responded to the call apparently did a good job of cleaning a lot of it up so good for them. I still am concerned how much is in the soil and water.

Looks like the mayor is on the hook for a good chunk of change, I'm sure that the soil has been saturated to some degree and that soil needs to be dug up and removed.

Wish I could find a link to post it, but a story in the local "EMC" basicly says the Mississippi Mills FD did a great job to contain the spillage, and should have (hopefully :? ) minimal affect on the envronment.

If thats the case a big thank-you to the residents who spotted/smelt this spill for contacting the proper authorities.

p.s.

I'm another local resident who is also concerned. The EMC article is a good one and kudos to the FD who responded on the scene.
This is a gem of a spot which is under heavy fishing pressure to start with, it definitely did not need this to happen. Hopefully mother nature with a little help from the scientists can clean it up.
