Had another great weekend of Bass fishin' despite the rather uncooperative weather. My Saturday outing had to be reduced to just a couple of hours at the end of the day. I had some work at the cottage I just had to get done. I worked all day in relatively nice weather and just around 5:00 pm, the grey, dark clouds coupled with high winds began to move in. Just my luck, I thought.
I Decided I was going fishin' no matter what the weather threw at me. I loaded up the boat and headed for a nearby lake. When I finally got the boat in the water, it was about 6:30 pm, I had about 2 1/2 hrs to fish!The weather was terrible. It was cold, windy and raining pretty hard. Hardly the type of weather us, Bass fisherman look forward to fishing in.
Suprisingly though the fish were goin' !
I started off with a scum-frog and nailed a bunch of decent fish,
The frog was working great but was getting difficult to fish in the stiff winds and fading light. I decided to switch things up, and started chuckin' a big willow-leaf spinnerbait. I was fishing it really fast through the edges of the pads and the Bass were eatin' it up!

Great evening of fishing, despite the crummy weather. I was only on the water for about 2 1/2 hrs!
I knew that tomorrow would be really tough though. The front was passing through and it was really starting to cool off. On top of this I had made plans to fish Sharbot Lake the next day(Sunday) with a couple of buddies. I had never fished this particular lake before in my life. Not the best conditions to start fishing a large waterbody that your unfamiliar with.
The following morning's weather greeted me just as I'd expected. Cool, clear and windier than hell
Sharbot Lake is Huge, Crystal clear and has hardly any weeds. The fishing was challenging to say the least. From first observation, I think its more of a smallmouth fishery than largemouth. We only caught about 10 largemouths all day, and had to cover alot of water to find them. I managed to catch a couple of nice ones over the course of the day. Both came from really shallow water. One on a scum-frog, and one on a spinnerbait.
We made the decision to move out to deeper waters and try for some Smallies. There are tons of shoals, humps, points and ledges to fish in this lake. It would take you a week to explore it all. We manged to get into a bunch of smallies. Size however, was the challenge! The lake is full of 12-14 inch Smallies! I imagine there are some huge Smallmouths in there, but they weren't showing themselves this day. We got all our Smallmouths on "whacky rigged" Wave, Tikki sticks. Colour didn't really matter and most fish came from 10-15 feet of water.This was the best one we were able to find.
All in all, not a bad day on "new" water with a couple of buddies. I'd really like to try this lake again, in the fall and see if there are a few brutes swimmin' around.
Why can't it be the weekend all the time?
