Guess Why?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Guess Why?

Post by OTRA »

Let's see how good your marine biology is (yeah I already have the answer).

Recently, Baltimore, Md. Inner Harbor has seen a dramatic increase in the number of jellyfish. Why?

Cause Spongebob found out that Mr. Krabbs was killing all of them, so he blew up the factory, and now that he's not fishing for them, there's been a dramatic increase in jellyfish population!

Cause Baltimore spelled backwards is Eromitlab.
Eromitlab is a complex male hormonal secretion divied out my male Jelly fish when in a highened state of arousal.
Some moron must have yelled this term out loud at some point in time .. because now, all the blonde, female jellie fish are comin in to the bay lookin for a good time.

Possibly, but what change in the climate would cause that?

I don't know but the reasons could be

1) overfishing and jellyfish move in to take up the slack or
2) poor oxygen content in the harbor due to who knows what ... excess nutrients in the water or something --- jellyfish are oyxgen-poor tolerant

and dunno how warm the water is in baltimore but warming water could make it better suited to jellyfish... and they move in

and the answer is ?

Cause it's bloody warm out for October and they haven't left the harbour due to warmer than usual water temps? Or maybe it was that Spongebob thing.

Here's a guess, let's see what ecology class taught us...

Jelly fish, like most predatory organisms will be drawn to abundances of food supply, and for jelly fish that means micro-organisms and small fish. In-order to have an increased abundance of micro-organisms (Plankton) and small fish there has to be an increase in either energy input (heat/sunlight) or increased nutrient loading (Agricultural runoff/sewage drainage).

I'm going to throw out a guess, they're attributing it to climate change which has caused warmer then usual water in the harbour which has caused a bloom in micro-organisms which has attracted the swarms of jelly fish.

Am I close?

As much of a huge Sponge Bob fan I am, I'll have to go with GetTheNet's opinion. Makes good sense to me.

A little off topic, but maybe not too much so, we have a Great Egret here on Otisco Lake. Not too many Great Egrets see the appeal of Central New York. He's been here for over a month.
