Ice-out Splake?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Ice-out Splake?

Post by Tronster »

I just read an article in Ontario Out of Doors about ice-out Lakers. I know the Laker season around here opens way later than ice-out, but there are a few lakes where the Splake season is open year round. I've fished Lakers (and Splake) in late spring/summer with riggers, but never after ice-out. Can any Fish-Hawkers suggest Splake lakes in the Ottawa-Kingston area where Splake might be caught right after ice-out?

I can smell the open water!!!

Tronster: Why don't you just ask the trout guys for their banking info as well....They are a tight lipped group for sure. I know of a few splake lakes but at ice-out you will have a tough time because it is in between ski doo access and driving or ATV...very sloppy to get to. If you dont get anyone to help I will tell ya one spot but it will cost ya

Actually, some trout guys I know (mainly Rainbow/Spec types) would probably be more likely to give up their banking info than revealing their favourite hot spots. All I was hoping to get was the names of some lakes where people had had success -- not the Lat-Long of their hot reef or shoal. I expect access could be a problem, but I was wondering if some of the Splake lakes between Kingston and Ottawa might be accessible early in the year. Anyway, it never hurts to ask, eh?

And, hey, isn't exchange of info one of the thinks Hawk-Talk is all about??

There are quite a few lakes in your area just loaded with splake however I would have to agree with a/f where accessibility is concerned....

If you want ice-out lakers, Algonquin Park ice is often off just days before the trout season starts...

The past few years, ice has been off somewhere between April 20-28th. Season opens the 26th this year so it's possible you could be trolling in the icebergs ...

can't help you with the splake lakes but good luck with that.

you could try granit or grindstone lake up in the plevna/ompah area. They are stocked with splake.
