What is this mystery fish ?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

What is this mystery fish ?

Post by fishead-ed »

What is this ?

I've caught these fish on 3 different lakes in close proximity to one another on the Quebec side. It's not a sucker as it doesn't have the extendable "lips" on the lower jaw. It doesn't seem to match up with what I see on the internet as being a Whitefish or a Lake Herring (unless they're a particular strain of these species). :?

It just looks like a giant minnow. I've caught them up to 2 pounds  (the one in the picture is about 1 pound) and they do seem to school. I've caught them while trolling or casting.

Can anyone identify it ?

I think it's what is called a "Fallfish", a large member of the minnow family. I caught a few in Big Cedar Lake a few years ago. Google "Fallfish" and see what you think.

Tronster is correct in that it is actually a minnow. They're lots of fun on the fly rod as well. ;-)

Definitely a fallfish, I catch lots of those at my dads, some of pretty decent size.
