Got out last night with my girlfriend to the Hartwell Locks to do some panfishing. Caught some nice ones. One thing is for sure; those bluegills and pumpkinseeds really love size 14 purple scuds (although I didn't really tie on any different flies).
Some other cool things to note happening in the canal:
-On the way down there along the path, we saw thousands of small minnows schooled up around a few clumps of weeds. Didn't think much of it until we saw a fairly large bass zipping through them and around them. At first I thought that it was trying to eat the minnows but then figured that it was a male protecting his fry. Pretty awesome to see. If I can, I'll try to get some video of it and post.
-On the canal this morning, there were lots of surfacing carp. It appeared as though they were 'gettin it on'. They were surfacing in groups of 2-8 all huddled together. Presumably it's it's 7 dudes chasing down a female.
Canal Pan Fishing
hey evan,
the carp were spawning in the bend in the canal just upstream of the somerset bridge. we walked past that area this morning and didn't see a single one.
either they all decided to spawn on the same day or something in the temp-pressure system turned off the activity. we probably say about a dozen pods of frolicking carp.
