What's your BEST surface FROG??

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

What's your BEST surface FROG??

Post by Fishing 24/7 »

ok iv been trying LOTS of surface frogs and been spending lots of time in heavy cover!

seems to me that the ''scum'' frogs and bass rats are real good for heavy cover!

but nothing beats a SPRO for the giants in lilly pads they just go nuts over the ''skirted'' legs!!

What's your favourite one , were does it work best , what type of weed , and why????

i also find the SPRO a better desing you never hook a weed on! compared to bass rats or scums were 1/2 you get hook somewere!

whats your opinnion on this?

I'm partial to toads these days, hurts a little less when a pike swims off with one in his yap and the hookup ratio is better IMO. My favourites are the Mann's Hardnose toads and Strike King Rage Toad. The latter kicks up a fuss comparable to a buzzbait.

the only frog i have is spro one, and it is completly weedless. I have only used it once and i had about five blowouts on it but no hook-ups. the first 2 i set the hook right away and the bait came flying at me, but the other times i let the fish take it, but i couldnt hook it and it would spit it out!

I heard that u can bend the hook outwards to increase hook-ups but i couldnt get them to budge!?

So was it just bad luck or is there something that i could do to help increase hook-ups :?: :?: :?:

I've had a few bass take a pumpkinseed Rage Toad before. Surface frogs haven't worked for me before although I rarely give them a chance.

For those who use Rage Toads, do you separate the section that is like a horseshoe near the end of the leg/foot, or, do you fish it exactly as it comes out of the package?

Il give another point to the rage toad. Although I have never used them, I was playing around with a few today and really can't wait too! I would imagine the kicker legs could work both ways, if it was me I would separate them for more action.

Another couple of baits which I would recommend are the 'Load Toad' and 'Bully Frog' from BearPaws Custom Hand Poured Plastics. They are poured by a small company in NY who I have been Pro-Staff for for a couple of years ...To the hawkers who I have givin packs of the hippie stick baits too, you can attest to the quality of the baits and the outstanding scent of MegaStrike fish attractant John bakes right in...Give them a look at on the product page...and the other plastics.. If you cannot find the right pattern within the 140 patterns in the color chart, you can have your baits done up custom with your 'own' pattern of choice!

Another few favorites of mine are the Swamp Donkey from Reaction Innovations..

And the Bobby's perfect and tournament frogs from Snag Proof

I like the SPRO frogs too, just most of them are all punctured with holes and need some TLC with the crazy glue...Rig them with Zoom screw lock toad hooks or the gammy superline EWG in the 3/0 - 4/0, (The ones with the rings)

They only work one way. The plastic that holds the kicker legs to the body of the bait is to avoid the legs getting deformed in the package. The bait has no action if you don't separate them.

I've become quite partial to the HardNose toads. I rig them on a 4/0 Gammy EWG.
