This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Petewawa Fishing - A report

Post by Rico24 »

So this weekend, i went to petewawa, since my boat was not fixed yet, i had to fish from shore. I was at Black Bear Campsite right on the base. Second time i go there. Theres a beach there, and at the complete left, theres a rock wall i guess you can call that, that goes out for 100feet i would say, its quite dangerous to go to the end. The first year, we saw people fishing from the end of the rock wall, so this year, i decided to go try it out. I was brining both my rods, and my big tackle box, very hard to do, i was also going there in flip flops in my shoes, quite stupid i would say. Anyways, about 5 minutes to walk all the way to the end, than i get my stuff ready, and cast out my senko. I saw a fish swiming in the water, so i casted a little behind him, and bam he just went for him, he gave me a really good fight, my first smallmouth fight! My sister took the picture from the beach, far away, so not the best quality, does not help that she's not good at taking pictures :P

Here it is, id say 1 1/2 pounds i guess, felt like a huge fish, but when i saw it i was like, WOW

I also checked some other place to go fishing from shore. This man told me to go somewhere, so i went, and it was a nice little spot, we arrived at the same time as this other couple, they where fishing with worms, and well i hate worms, so i was trying a senko, and some random lures that looked good. I had no luck at this spot.

So than we moved to one last spot, we stopped on the side of the highway, where we saw this trail, decided to go see. It was under a brige, there was a little bit of current, so i decided to cast a floating lure, and let it go with the current then real it it. I cought a 2 inch bass, was pretty funny, the lure was almost as big as him  Sorry, no pics, did not bring the camera down there. That was all i got there, when we were leaving, this fly fisherman was going down. He told me he cought a little bass the other day, than this big musky came and just ate it, than he had it on his line! Also while fishing on the rocks, the first spot, i met this guy, he has a little bass on his line, than bam, this 30inch pike just comes and take a bite out of it. I run to go see, but the bass had to off, but the pike was just about a feet from the shore, so he just plays with the bait there, than bam, he has it on his line, pretty cool.

Sorry for the long read with no pictures, just did not want to risk my camera over in the rocks, dont want to lose my camera.

Haha nice report Rico......

Looks like a nice spot to be.....i like it up there...I'm going up north of there in the fall to fish for Walleye....

Mattawa and Deux Rivieres.............

That rock wall looked hard to walk on haha.....but u did catch fish off of it so thats good....

Did better than me it seems. i do pretty horribly 99% of the time haha....

anyways, keep the reports coming! I love reports..

What was that little river in the other spot?

Petawawa river?

Or the Ottawa in a small section?

I caught a 1.5lb smallie at Calabogie Lake and the thing fought like crazy, it was pulling out so much of my drag and the rod tip was bent down like crazy in the shape of a C turned on it's side. It was crazy, i though it was at least 4lbs, but the thing was like 1.5 at most.....my rock bass weighed the same amount...lol.....

Weird how they fight so hard...they are just so strong...The rod was jammed in my stomach and i was holding on for dear life..lol.....best fight i've ever had, that smallie.......and only 1.5 lbs!!!!!

Anyways, i'm out for the night, take it easy my friend,

Hey tom!

I think that small river was the petewawa river going into the otawa.. not too sure though. And yes, that rock wall sure was hard! A lot of the times you step on a rock, but it's not solid, so you slip, or get your foot stuck. Yep, smallies fight, i think i preffer them over largies :)

Haha yes I thought it was the Petawawa River....

Yes i prefer Smallies too........I'd rather catch a 1lb smallie over a 1.5lb largie.

Smallies fight better. Especially river smallies....

This one smallie on calabogie lake was maybe 1-1.5lbs and the thing was taking all the line and everything......the fish was so strong....

Anyways, Take care

Petawawa river

Rico,
You were indeed at the mouth of the Petawawa river where it empties into the Ottawa, from your picture, I know exactly where you were.
Next time you're up there, make your way up the Petawawa river near the falls. Pick a spot and fish at the base of the falls. You will be pleasantly surprise by what hangs around in there. I go fly fishing there and I always have a great time.
Best of luck...and wear a life jacket when you fish there, even from shore, if you fall in, it will take you down river real fast, and there are some big rocks on the way.
