Shallow Walleye's

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Post by Xenos »

Just looking for opinions as to how users fish walleye shallow.

I normally just horizontal jig.

I got that stringer earlier this week on shallow running cranks....

I think if they are in shallows they actively feeding so covering water would be the plan...I could be wrong though

Techniques I like to use for shallow eye's:
I will cast jig with power jig worm or twister tail, reel in pause...wait for tick and set hook. Great in rough chop and high winds.

Mepps spinner with 3" twister rig'd with a single keeper hook (Great weedless lure)

Shallow Minnow Cranks, if they are up shallow on rocks I will some times use a diver crank that smacks into bottom to get a reaction.

Eye-tracker,

Just curious as to whether you end up with a few bass this way. I was briefly attempting this style of shallow fishing today (Otisco Lk. has walleye, too) with lures similar to those you describe, but we started picking up too many bass and so moved off. Any advice? Thanks. :D

Wolfe...
I get this question alot :D
I catch very few Bass fishing shallow for walleye, but I do catch the odd one and it is usually a small mouth bass because they like the same location as walleye. I target the eyes in water that I think they will be feeding on bait fish, usually in heavy winds 15-25 mph. Last night on my local lake I fished island drops, mid lake humps and flats (3-5 FOW) and caught lots of walleye and no bass. I work my baits quickly and look for active feeders...Also if I know an area holds bass I will not fish that area until end of june. On some lakes I know of one rock pile holding nested small mouth and only 50 yards away another holds walleye when they are up feeding from the main basin of the lake.

I wish there was an easy answer to this one but there is none... :(

Other than the musky and the huge perch, I got skunked. I couldn’t find walleye anywhere and I know this water, it's full. All I can figure is there up on the shore. I have my game plan for this Saturday let’s see if I can get skunked again.

Main channel was 48-50 not just at the surface but down as low as 50 feet ( we were everywhere) all we saw were hundreds of carp in 9-12 feet of water ( Aqua Vu). Up the inlets it the water got as warm as 58. I jigged all over and ran stick baits along the shore and up the inlets off plainer boards Ran the baits anywhere from 1.4 – 1.9 Mph.

Mahumba,

That is one of the nicest smallies I have ever seen. Shouldn't have the word "small" in its name at all!

Temps on the lake I am fishing is 68 F...the walleye are feeding in their summer hang outs on mid lake humps and shorelines of islands when the wind is blowing, or causing a current between islands and mid lake humps. One area has a sand bottom that meets rock...this spot has been hot the last few day with the strong south wind bashing into the sand shore.

Last year at this same time the water was only 48-54F. The average depth of the lake is only around 8 feet so the water is warming up very fast with this warm weather.

Xenos...they are out there somewhere feeding...now you just have to find them :D
