Lowrance HDS series
I'm thinking of buying the HDS 7 for next year. Can anyone comment on how well the internal GPS for that unit performs? Do they frequently break lock or are they fairly dependable? Any other comments on the unit overall?

I have had no problems with losing satelites, only have had the unit shut off 3 times but 2 of those was when I was messing with it.
I like the built in antena saves a lot of trouble during installation as well as having to make sure no one covers the antena.
It's a great unit I can't wait for the side finder ad on to be available as well as the 3D maps for Canada.

I have the HDS 5 and for fishing it cant be beat. The GPS that is built I would have to say is lacking. I travel on charted water ways a fair bit, the accuracy of the GPS is not that of the previous LMS series with WAAS enabled GPS. I found that the previous unit would coninual get you back on the same features with in a couple of feet where this unit gets you to the general area. But the clairity of the fish finder makes up for the loss in GPS accuracy.
Jig Heads been using the HDS units this season and has only winded back good things to me about them. I know he relied on the GPS to put them onto a few smaller spots and had no problems. All plus++ comments and reviews I have heard about the HDS. Been looking at the HDS-5

I purchased an HDS7 in April and used it on 5 fishing trips during the season. I was very satisfied with the way the unit worked. However, during pouring rain in Sep, the head unit filled with water and quit. Its been sent back to Lowrance for a replacement head unit. Apparently not every HDS7 unit leaks?? I also purchased the Navionics HotMaps Premium chip which is a great asset when fishing lakes on the chip. Just wish that there were more Ontario and Quebec lakes on the chip.

Same here guys, had numerous Lowrance products ( now 2 x 520C's) and never any problems. Everytime I never clarification on how the unit worked, they were always friendly and helpful.

I highly recommend one of the Hummingbirds especially with the new side imaging and down imaging. Not to mention there warranty
I find lowrance has really changed since it was sold to Navco just my personal opinion.
