I was wondering what brand and calibers of rifles people were using for their deer hunt this year.

I hunt a controlled hunt in December where it is shotgun only. Remington 1100 fully rifled barrel redfield 2x-7x scope. Works great.

The WMU I hunt in is shotgun and muzzle loader only. That said I use my Winchester 1300 Black Shadow full rifled barrel 12 gauge or my Remington Genesis 50 Cal. muzzle loader.

SeaMonster: I love the X-Bolt...the finish is amazing...very sticky with the Dura-Touch coating that they apply.

Wow! It seems as though there are a plethora of nice rifles in various calibers out there.

Since it seems as though we're stating all the guns we could use...here goes mine. Along with the .270 WSM I have the option of:

Browning BAR .243 2-7X40 Leupold

6.5X55 Sporterized Swedish Mauser...serial numbers all match on the components...but it has been changed too much for collectors value...the bolt has been modified so that a scope could be attached. 3-9X40 Bushnell Elite QUESTION!!! The barrel is super long on this gun...I am thinking of shortening it...how much am I going to effect the performance?

.308 Howa...bull barrel...Bolt action...black synthetic matte stock...my father picked this one up to add to my collection...has anyone had any experience with this company? He swears by them. 3-9X40 Bushnell Elite

I still need to get a deer with the .270 (I missed a big buck last year).
I haven't gotten one with the 6.5X55 either...but have only sat with it a few times and there has been no opportunity.
The Howa .308 has just come out of the box...dad is hoping to Christen it this year.

I am looking forward to this season...I didn't have any luck on the moose hunt...(saw 3 cows and 3 HUGE bulls...but only had calf tags).

Like a kid waiting for Christmas...only 5 more sleeps!

I use the a-bolt in the same caliber. And a rem semi auto 20gauge fully rifled barrel slug gun with a red dot for pushing bush or tight areas...

And my most favorite, my Hoyt!

You all have some really nice rifles...I am envious.

I'll be using my old trusty sporterized .303 British mark IV that will be loaded up with 160 grain Federal Premium ammo.

I am looking for a new gun for next year as I plan to keep my .303 for moose only. I had been looking at a .270 or 270 WSM but after several good conversations with people I have decided to go with a .308 Tikka or Browning in either a lever, pump or bolt.

I was dead set on some version of the 270 as I have heard great things, but due to the fairly thick bush and small amount of open fields I hunt in I was persuaded to go with something in the 30cal family. Apparently the 270 has shown a tendency to deflect off of twigs and branches rather than powering through them when in thicker cover. I have also heard that the crazy speeds that the 270 produce can make a mess of your deer if the placement of your shot is off target. However if you do happen to hunt in areas of open fields it is an absolute deer slayer and an incredible caliber to hunt with.

Not a hunter... but there are plenty of times on the farm year round that shooting something or another is required.

.270 is a great deer gun.
But yes, I use it for open field. Deadly acurate and flat shooting.
I've found my .270 makes less mess than a 30-06.

I had a .308 Browning lever that I sold shortly after I bought it. I just couldn't get a good grouping. And i do consider myself a good shot. Might have just been that particular gun, but it turned me off.

Cprince. I have the same Lee Enfield.

What grain weight do you shoot fellas?

I go with the 130g in my .270 as I found it the most accurate at the 100yrd range I shoot on. Out past there is un-tested by myself.

My buddy tried the a bunch of rounds and found 150g was better.

I go between 140 and 150.
I've used 140 out past 200 yards with no issue.
I have a feeling my .270 "likes" 140 better. Been wanting to compare the two side by side

Heading to camp tomorrow. Stopping by my bro's farm on the way and will set up a target in the field to test that out.

Just my two cents but dont pay for the name the 270 wsm is what my friend uses for moose and deer. Tikka and Brownind is all about the name i just got a 30-06 Remington for $575 out the door
