how to tell what length of trolling motor shaft

with the risk of having every one comment about their shaft length ( lol). How deep should your box mount be in the water? shallo or as deep as you can get er?

if you fish shallow you want shorter if you fish deep your want longer cause when it get wavy the motor stays in the water it doesn't keep coming out of the water with a annoying Sound and vibration. But a long shaft in shallow water can get in the way for casting especially skipping your bait under dock .
