Salmon Fishing - Updated W/ Pics
This weekend I'm heading out to go salmon fishing for the first time ever, I'm used to being just a pike/musky or bass fisherman so salmon is pretty new to me, I was just wondering if any experts here had tips on what baits/lures to use, any particular rig methods, or anything that can help me catch a few nice fish. I will be shore fishing by the way! Thanks in advance
EDIT: Well I went out on wednesday, in search of my first salmon and using the advice from the users below I was able to land 3 salmon myself, and a friend of mine was able to land 3 as well. I also landed a monster 40 inch fish( 35-40lbs) the last night of the trip, unbelievable experience that's for sure. The salmon didn't seem super active yet but the river was fairly low, 5 fish were caught on skein while the 40 inch was caught closer to the mouth on a spoon.

Re: Salmon Fishing Questions
Cleo's or other heavy casting spoons at the mouth of the rivers. They are not feeding but will hit out of reaction or you line them as they swim with their mouth open and lure will end up being pulled to their mouth.

Will give this a try, should I stay out of the rivers then?CBB wrote:Cleo's or other heavy casting spoons at the mouth of the rivers. They are not feeding but will hit out of reaction or you line them as they swim with their mouth open and lure will end up being pulled to their mouth.

hey man if you're going to be in the river - have faith in the bead! put a small colored bead or even fluorescent yarn about 1.5 inches above the hook, let it float in the current. the salmon wont be eating right now, theyll be attacking. so i find using bright colours to pee pee them off enough to attack works best.

For biters best bet is fishing the harbour at night with glow spoons, plugs or skein. For fighters best bet is fly fishing with any fly on a decent sized hook. When you go to retrieve your line give it a pull and get them in the mouth. They don't bite in the rivers, some people love it but personally it's not for me. Anyone who tells you they're biting in those busy sections of river like downtown port hope is lying.
