Splake on ice

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Splake on ice

Post by Nyarlathotep »

Went to a Madawaska-area back lake on Christmas day, and caught my limit in about 4 hours. All fish had been stocked in 2017, and averaged just under 1 kg in weight.

It was a 15 km snowmobile ride on abandoned logging roads and trails to reach the lake from the access road. The ride went up and along (heavily frosted) poplar-covered ridges, as well as up and down hills covered with various conifers.

Caught my fish on a set line baited with small live minnows as well as jigging an Acme Kastmaster (1/4 oz., red flash tape) tipped with bits of minnow. The ice on the lake was about 25 cm where I was fishing (5 to 10 feet deep). Brought a vintage, homemade ice chisel, but ended up using a STIHL auger to get through the ice.

Shore campfire. Dried out balsam fir saplings burn well, but make for a “sparky” fire.

Good for you on the solo tour, not sure I would do that without a buddy along, just too many things that could go wrong, like injury or breakdown.
Way to go on the Splake, always good when a plan comes together.

Cheers
