So whats going on with the Trout scene?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

I haven't been on the Ottawa for about a month so I can't really say first hand, though the guys at the fly shop have said it's been a good year. I've seen a few pics of some nice browns taken this year.

The water level was low the last time I checked so you'd have to probably find the deeper holes in and around the rapids for them. The best time also seems to be in the evenings/night.

Paya,

What are you using in terms of flies?

As for locations, I guess the best location for success would be where they released the fish from the Quebec side just downstream from Champlain Bridge, though I'm still trying to find out from the MNR whether one can park in QC and wade the Ottawa on an Ontario Licence. A nice one was caught off of the first island on the Champlain Bridge.

Its an interesting thing about stocked browns. They often don't go far from where they are released. I fish the Grand River quite a bit and always head for the stocking spots. Wild browns which I fished out west are extremely wary. You get one cast and never closer than 20 ft and they are gone.

I think they released 2000 sub-adult browns this year, so I would assume that the would have to spread out to other areas of the river where competition for food is not as intense. Still from what Vince and Tony at the shop have said, percentage wise you're better off around where they released them, though the ones caught are usually small.

Hey Todd,

usually I tried to use different Caddis, Addams Patterns, streamers, mayflies,Wooly Buggers, Professor, nymphs etc...

but most interesting for me is that they release them on QC side :)
I always fish ON side ..dummy..I guess that is a reason why I'm not able to get any :))

Is it that island where the parking is ?
If so I wonder if is any good to fish from there and cast towards QC side

thanks for response :)

Paya,

They are released from the Quebec side because they stocked fish are obtained from the Kanauk Reserve outside of Montabello.

As for flies, it is my understanding that the majority are caught on wet flies (wooly buggers, muddlers, wooly muddler, etc) though occasionally on a dry.

The parking is on the third island. You have to wade back across towards Ottawa to to get to the others. Given the lower water level you might be able to fish the North side of the island where the kayakers normally play, but usually it's too dangerous to fish unless you're using a boat. The other spots are close to the QC side of the river and as I posted earlier I'm still looking for clarification on the Regs regarding InterProvincial access.

Also, an episode of the New Fly Fisher (Saturday mornings on PBS) was dedicated to fishing in the Capital Region and highlighted the brown trout in/around the rapids.

Todd,

I shore fished the QC side last year with Ont license, and to make sure it's ok, I asked one officer checking licenses. So no problem wade that side..

Well always better to be safe than to let the QC CO's confiscate all of your gear. :-)
