How Many of you Keep Bass to Eat??

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Where are walleye a put and take fishery Steve?.....that is news to me.....

It certainly isn't around here.....yes the special interest groups do some work to preserve spawning grounds.....but no stocking that I know of.....I could be wrong....but I've never heard of it....they aren't Salmon....

Whenever ths topic comes up I always get a kick out of the "let the bass go" stance......I think I'm gonna start the "let the perch go" movement...     ......we all have a particular fish that we hold near and dear to our hearts....and that's cool by me!.....just odd if ya think about it....

i dont have the stats on hand, but i know for sure that walleye stocking happends on Nippissing, Stoney, and sections of GB. Oh ya Grand River too.

dont know of any places that stock bass.

w/ the amount of effort that goes in protecting walleye....i like to give those hard working bass a hand, lol.

This should have been a poll........

I pull a fair bit of bass in the summer. I normally keep my limit once during the year while renting a cottage with my in-laws, to have a fish meal. Otherwise, unless a was dumb enough to give to much time to the bass to get the hook real deep and it is hurt bad, everything goes back.

Crappie, perch and walleye is an other story

I'm sure I will be corrected on this by some.....but I don't think the bass population is under any real decline than any other species..... :?

RJ: To answer your earlier question about why are bass put on such a pedestal while other species eaten. You are looking at totally different groups that are targetting these species. Put your average bass angler onto walleye, he will still throw them back. Take your average walleye fisherperson bass fishing and he will want to take them home. Of course I am speaking in generalities here. Each specialist of a particular species has their own code that they follow. Case in point, let a bass angler catch a muskie, take a picture holding it wrong, and watch the fur fly, even though the musky was released.

It is my personal opinion however that walleye anglers should step back and take a look at their "put and take" attitude. It is my humble opinion that the walleye stocks are declining because of the pressure put on them by the keepers.

In the opinion of a "grizzeled old veteran"

OK to my way of thinking the fact that walleye are stocked in some waters is a sign that they are in trouble and need the help :? and the lack of stocking programs for bass indicate that they are doing just fine on their own,

As for walleye being a put and take fishery it seems that a dangerous generalization is being made just because they are stocked in one body of water does not meen that is the case everywhere

Keeping Bass

Post by Spence Scout »

Bass to me isn't a fish to keep for panfrying, I mean when I was younger I kept them. But that was before I targeted them as sport. I mean I've eaten sunfish, bluegill and they taste much better then Bass. I think of Bass as a more enjoyable fish to target. When I go for them eating fish isn't even in my mind. To me their to enjoyable to keep. When I want a taste of fish I'll go for the abundant panfish (sunfish, perch,) ... Yes sunfish are great to eat. To those of you who have never tried sunfish they are tasty.
I've caught an abundance of bass in the past few summers and haven't kept a single one. To me their to precious to keep.

Wow, I think Toobinator hit the point that I was trying to say. Exactly how I feel ..

Steve not sure walleye are really a put and take species....unless you're refering to the Americans putting them in the great lakes and the Canadian commercial fleet taking them out.
