Do we need a seperate forum for boating?

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Moosebunk wrote:Agreed. I'd like to lose community, great lakes, funny stories, hockey and non-fishing and just have them all back in Fishing. Bobbing around throughout the forums sucks in my opinion.

Keep, buy sell trade, derby, upcoming events, and have fishing as the fourth. Four, that's all we need. Unless having so many has something to do with how the site is managed and operates. :?
I gotta agree with you Bunk, ....in one respect anyways, the board has slowed down so much, it takes half the day, just switching forums....

On the other side, if everything was in the one forum, ..you'd have to visit several times a day(not that it's a bad thing), or you'll likely miss something cause things would move along so fast...

I guess it's seven of one, ...three dozen of the other, :? ....or something like that .....

I think we should keep it in the fishing/non - fishing forums. If anyone's like me, I only pop in and check the fishing and non-fishing forums regularly (atleast once a day), and the classifieds once in a while. I don't really ever check any other forums or anything on this site.

One thing we really should consider is history.
Take for example, boat batteries (which I will be posting a question about since I do not wish to scroll through 80 pages of archives to find the last post).

You might find that a boat forum would be very slow in winter and summer, and busy in spring and fall. But there would be a clear location of where to look up all your boat specific info.

Of course this is a fishing site, and hence fishing boat type questions and answers. I doubt we'll have too many jet ski questions pop up.

Food for thought.

Mr. J, et al;

Don't ever stop thinking man. I don't. My take on everything is that there is always another way to do something....it may not be better than the way it is now, but if no one ever thought of new ways, then where would we be.

The idea is a valid one, and has been brought up many times before. I've been wrestling with this very topic for a while now on what to do. How many forums is too many?

The reason why we have a Fishing Talk forum is so that we can discuss everything in one place so that people do not have to go flipping around from forum to forum to see what is going on. yes, there will be some information that some people find interesting, and other information that some do not find interesting, but we cannot possibly create forums for every different topic. What we have tried to do is to separate our forums according the what we feel the majority of people, in relation to the forum that we are targeting, would be interested in. For example, most of the talk that happens in the Fishing Talk forum is about Eastern Ontario fishing. This does not really benefit those in the Great Lakes area since they have a different type of fishing that we don't necessarily get here....so we created a forum to talk about that stuff. The non-Fishing forum is self explainatory. We've even been thinking of adding a "Float and Fly Fishing Forum" as a new forum to begin to strike up conversation on those topics. I think it would generate a lot of traffic.

We have added some forums where no one can post to.....however people can reply to topics that we move there. The reason why we move them there is so we can save the information and it does not get buried or purged from the system. It's great information and I don't want to lose the content. The Community Fishing Stories and Tips are examples of these types of forums.

Just the other day it was suggested to create a forum for Conservation and Political Topics. Again, while I like the idea, whether we like it or not, conservation and politics is part of everyone's fishing, not really specific.

So how much is too much? Some like many forums of different topics, some like to get it all in one place. We try to make sure that when we do create a new forum, it is being created for a specific reason, either to capture the audience on the Great Lakes and give them a place to chat, save important information for posterity, provide a means for our supporters to get their messages out to you guys and gals, or introduce a new type of fishing that will provide value to those who partake in it, such as Float Fishing or Fly Fishing.

Great idea Mr. J, however I don't think boating is really a category that would add more value to the forum. Keep em coming.

At time of this posting 80% said no need to creare another forum for boating and that speaks pretty loudly.

Thanks for your interest and thanks for fish-hawk of course.

Hey Mr. J and everyone...
It's just great to see the interest that people have...making a suggestion like J did only shows he loves this board and wants to help make it better.
I am a big believer in no stupid questions...and No stupid Ideas..I mean who would have ever thought the Hoola hoop or Slinky or Rubicks cube were a good suggestion...Do you guys know how much ridicule the guys that make Trivial pursuit got...Man that really stupid Idea made them pretty rich. If you have heard some of the things I have suggesyed you might  but ya never know...KEEPEM COMIN!!

There are almost too many forums now...My vote is to keep it as it is.

BTW, there is a handy search option on the board and you can select the "Watch this topic for replies" link in the bottom left hand corner of each messade. In your profile you can also select "Always notify me of replies: yes/No" to get an email on messages that you start/reply to.

My point is there is a few feature that allow you to stay on top of topics of interest.

Cheers,

Mike

Alright, I am going to bring this up again.

This is not a popularity contest, but if I am seeing things right, there is a Float/Fly fishing Forum.

I am seeing a heck of a lot more boat related questions than Float/Fly questions.
I know boats are usually a seasonal topic (Spring and Fall), but I gotta say, I am seeing the same questions being asked.

Long and short, do we really believe there is no value in a boat/motor/trailer/tow vehicle forum?

I agree.

In fact we all agreed we had too many board. And then added a Float/Fly fishing board.

So, I'll throw the question out again.

MT you have a good point, but you know the same questions coming up spring and fall make like a refresher course for those of us who forget quickly

Hey folks,

A Boating forum is a great idea, but just not one that we feel adds additional value at this time to the content of the site. Yes, some would say there are too many forums as it is, I would tend to have that same feeling, however with that said, we add forums in order to accomplish goals on this site. At one time everything was in Fishing Talk. The problem with that is that we tend to lose information after a while because old topics are automatically deleted in order to make sure our database does not get too big. Things like stories, tips, tricks, How Stupid was that, were designed without the pruning feature so that we can move things in there and not lose them. Hawk-ey Talk was one of the first forums ever put here. It is almost like a Historical Landmark with this board.

The Tournament Anglers forum was added to attract the tournament fisherman and have a place for them to talk tourney stuff, same with the Great Lakes Forum in order to attract those in an area beyond Eastern Ontario. Now we have decided to add a Float and Fly Fishing Forum to attract those anglers who are interested in this type of fishing. The whole goal is to give people relevant content in the areas that we are trying to expand in. Adding a Boating forum would be a good discussion, however would not really accomplish our goals at this time.

Perhaps someday, when we find a better way to categorize and organize forum topics, we will be in a better position to have an unlimited number of forums all categorized based on the topics they are discussing, with an easy to use interface that does not require the reader to just from forum to forum. Organization of the information, in order to accomplish a goal, along with ease of use is the most challenging part managing these boards.
