Oh Joy Oh Joy

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

With the compressed season we have here everyone (individual anglers, tournament events, pleasure boaters, etc) are all forced to use the water on the same 8 weekends a year. Obviously this poses challenges and some bodies of water become "over-fished" (as defined by some responses to this thread).

A few things to consider if guys think that tournaments are a major issue on the fish:

- how do you explain the walleye population declines everyone seems to complain about in the spring? It's not from catch and release, which ALL legitimate tournaments are.
- a lot of talk about Mississippi Lake pressure this year. Despite this, Renegade Bass had its highest EVER winning weight and someone also weighed in the BIGGEST bass ever weighed on the Miss in Renegade history. The fishing may be tougher - but the fish are still there in a big way.

A few other things to think about:
- if you read fishing magazines, watch shows on TV, read online, etc., etc., virtually all of this info is somehow related to tournament fishing, or tournament anglers. All those great tips we all crave are mostly provided to us because tournaments gave a platform to help share info (and move product!!).
- not sure I personally buy the argument that weighing in fish and moving them somewhere else in the lake is really "displacing fish from their habitat". Bass habitat is the water - and they are all returned there. Most bass are of no-fixed address and move around the lake and are very adaptable. Smallies are more finicky - so don't dump them in shallow swampy stuff!
- this is me hypothesizing, but I wouldn't be surprised if on an average weekend more fish are "lost" from those who rightfully keep some to eat, then would be from a tournament held on the same body of water. Tournaments are just easier to pick at because it is organized, rather than a selection of individuals.

I was wondering why there does not seem to be many tournaments in Oct and Nov.Is there something I am not aware of?

I suspect it's the same reason as there are fewer water skiers and pleasure boaters...it's just not as nice out! I guess we are a fair weather bunch. I think a lot of guys go into hunting mode that time of year too. Some of the best fishing can be had that time of year though! I'd be all for it.

Haulin Bass,

We actually have a tournament in October this year only because some of our members fish multiple series and this was to ensure we tried to let everyone fish them. I personally am looking forward to them because the bass usually put their feedbag on around the time of our tournament.

As for November, I would speculate it is because the bite is all but gone. You can still catch them, but they are harder to find and more finicky.

It will be interesting to compare the results with earlier ones from the same body of water to see if the # fish and weights get better. I know its a one shot sample but if they do put the feed bag on it should be a good one. You can get some really great weather in Oct but also some nasty cold stuff too. :)

Some of my best days have been in November, when the water temp gets into the low 50's/high 40's it's lights out. Look at some of the bags weighted in during the valley bass fall events.

You don't get to pick and choose your days to go out when tournament fishing, just saying.
If it’s snowing, I ain’t going out…..this ain’t the Elites!
October is reasonable, November would be pushing it in regards to selecting waters for tournaments.

HaulinBass,

Are you insinuating we prolong the tournaments or simply asking the question?

I'd be up for it but I know I wouldn't coach anything. I've tried quite a few times. The only place I have luck in November is Big Rideau and by luck, I man I caught 1 or 2 fish in 8 hours
