Ottawa River Water Levels

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

well i have a cottage on the ottawa in dunrobin (lord maybe i know him?) we've been there 20+ years now...and i can tell you that they are usually pretty accruate, but there is lag (obviously) in the report till when the water rises quite a few miles downstream. Usually within a few hours the levels are right where they say they will be.

Naaah, they're usually way off. Still not that useful a stat to know...

It'd be better to just go and look for yourself if you live on the water. Why don't you do that? Less water doesn't always mean more bites.

If you live on the water you don't need a website to tell you when to put your dock in. You can see for yourself.

You mentioned you have we've got a HUGE crew coming out on Saturday so this means if I wait till later in the afternoon to drop over I have a better chance of less work and more browns...

Kenny....the browns will start clinkin' at around 8:00AM tomorrow mornin'....that should help us decide how we're gonna pull those shacks off the river

Mongolian..

You really seem to have a problem with this.... I said I view the data using a computer rather than relying on visual. Let it go....

If you live on the water, why would you visually look at your computer instead of visually looking at the river? That's if you live on the river of course... If you've got the river right there, why look at the website at all? Especially when its usually inaccurate?

Priorguy,

so you monitor the river level on your computer, eh? Hmmm. Even when you live real close to it? Interesting......

I'm ok with it. Nothing wrong with that.

I can tell you why I look on the PC....when there's several hours lag, its nice to know that the water is going DOWN...I can go move the boat farther out on the dock...or move it even father and put it out on an anchor. Nothing worse than waking up at 2:30 in the morning to the sound of aluminum banging on the rocks :S because they have reduced the flow.

The Ottawa's level doesn't fluctuate enough that this should be a problem. You need a longer dock. It doesn't just drop 2 feet in a matter of hours.

not 2 feet no...but where i am its very shallow for a long way out...6 INCHES makes a big difference as to where things need to be. anyway...I'm done explaining myself to you....you're way to closed minded to understand that others might have an opinion that differs from your own :) have a good night

Mongolian...

I guess I should let you in on something.. I work at OPG and water is our thing.. Yes the water can fluctuate in excess of 3 feet at any given time. This is constantly monitored by two lake level gauges on chats lake at Sand Point Warf.

But.. I still go to the sites to read the data online when I am at home. Last year a couple buddies further up from where I live lost their docks and had nothing to do with length but rather the flow as a result of later frechect out of the north This happens every year and sometimes unexpectedly.

hmmm, interesting... you say the Ottawa's level can fluctuate 3 feet? In all my years of living beside the river I can't recall the river just rising or dropping 3 feet except in the spring. But that's normal and it doesn't just happen in a few hours, more like weeks. Of course, if the dams were opened up then it could happen but it doesn't.

And Andy, leaving your boat in 6 inches of water is not smart on a river like the Ottawa.
