"Angler's Elbow"

Probably not the board to ask, but there may be some OTHER old geezer besides me on here. Any way, last year I developed tennis elbow while fishing. It comes and goes for the last 10 months. Tried the brace just below the elbow with mixed results. Any tips would be appreciated.

BTW, my doc says it is from having too many candles on my birthday cake.

I can relate. I get it in my right arm by mid summer, from hanging over the side. I call it trollers' tendinitis...

I hear the sports medicine clinic in Ottawa can treat the problem with ultrasound. The technique apparently allows for greater bloodflow to the area which shortens healing time. I use the brace(s) with only minimal success. I also purchased opposite retrieve reels and while I can manage fine with baitcasting gear, I am awkard with spinning gear and absolutely pathetic managing my centre pin reel and 13ft rod. Ibuprophen and ice packs are the order of the day.

i had pitchers/golfers elbow 'cause from pitching (go figure) as a teenager, it's basically the same thing as tennis elbow, just on the opposite side of the elbow (tennis on top, golfers on the bottom). i had physio on it for 6 weeks and now only have problems from time to time lasting no more than a week and usually happens once a year, if that.

I was given the ultrasound and the electro thing, aswell as wearing the brace as needed and it cleared it up to my liking.... best thing i could say is don't stop using the elbow, but don't over use it- lots of alternating between hot and cold... now if someone has any tips for kienbocks disease or a degenerative wrist joint please share

I have had the same thing. 4 corisone shots, each one less effective than the previous. I was given an exercise after the last shot that helps prevent the injury. With your arm from the elbow to the wrist flat on a surface, lift and drop a small weight (5 lbs or so) up and down slowly. If it starts to hurt, stop. I do this 2 or 3 times a day with 20 or more repetitions each time. I have found this helps the injury before it occurs.

I'm surprised to see this thread. I'm off right now on short term disability for exactly this. Now I'm no golfer, etc but got it all the same. Funny thing, I'm going to the Ottawa Sports Clinic also...and my doc mentioned she had a patient that was a pro bass fisherman with the same affliction from continual casting. 3 cortizone shots, ultrasound and physio seems to have FINALLY done the trick.....( I hope).

If not....my doc assures me I should still be able to cast

WOW LOTS OF GEEZERS!

I have the same thing in my right arm (tendonitis) for the past few summers. Have had a cortisone shot initially but did not quiet do the trick. Had lots of codeine tablets and shots of vodka, worked great off the water, pain what pain, but this of course was only a short term solution. The only thing that really worked was physio with a young lady rubbing my arm and all the elctro gadgets worked but after at least 12 visits.

My arm hurts the most after 12 hours of slop fishing and flipping, to help out my arm I fish ambidextrously switching between left handed and right handed reels, seems to help some.
I know what you are going thought not much fun!!!!!!!!!!

If you are in the Orleans area I got a great physio place I could recommend.

I HAD THAT PROBLEM ABOUT 10 YRS AGO DUE TO WORK ENDED UP WITH TENNIS ELBOW AND THEN FOR A YEAR DOING THE SAME WORK BUT FAVORING THE TENNIS ELBOW I ENDED UP WITH GOLFERS ELBOW SO IF YOU HAVE TENNIS ELBOW GET IT CLEARED UP SOON. WHAT I DID IS LOTS OF ICING IT UP BUT NOT MORE THAN 20 MIN. AT A TIME AND WHEN UR DONE MAKE SURE NOT TO USE THE ELBOW FOR A GOOD 15 BECAUSE AT THAT POINT THE TENDON IS REALLY BRITTLE AND DO THIS 5-6 TIMES A DAY FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS AND U SHOULD BE FINE. TENDINITIS IS INFLAMATION OF THE TENDON. I USED A BAG OF FROZEN PEAS IT TAKES THE SHAPE OF THE ELBOW EASILY AND U JUST REFREEZE AFTER. LET ME KNOW HOW IT TURNS OUT ...

Hey Joco,

I have had surgery for carpal tunnel (in englais) in both wrists about ten years ago and it was 100% successful. One word of advice if you have it done don't watch I did and nearly passed out.

The ONLY ONLY thing that will work is switching to spinning gear...
i made the switch ten years ago and have had ZERO probs....
after years of pain.....
you can still flip and pitch with bait casters but
spinner baits , topwater ANYthing that requires a serious arm Extension
will make it recurr....it will only get worse...

after 35 years of problems i will say i not have NO bad back now.....
YOU MUST get your stomach, back , leg muscles stronger....
its not your spine that holds up you back its the muscles that hold up the spine that holds up your back...

if there is one thing i will get evangelical about its exercise
cause i dun seen dah light....and it must be at least twice a day
even if its only for ten minutes..
legstretches, crunches etc....you do not have to even sweat or go to a gym..

I have been playing competitive volleyball for over a decade now, and I also train Muay Thai kickboxing 4 days a week. As you can imagine, the stress on my joints is pretty substantial. I'm only 26, and I already feel the effects.

I started taking glucosamine and flax seed oil a while ago, and it has been a huge help in releiving stress on my joints (knees, elbows, etc). I used to have really sore joints after training, but now, I barely even notice it.

This may be helpful to you guys. I'd ask your doctor if this would be helpful in your case. I imagine it would be.

I hear ya on the pain. As a pitcher I go through simular stuff, the only thing that you can do is prevent it. Try and strengthen the area over the winter and come spring and summer when you will be doing your casting, trolling etc. chances are you wont get it or it wont be as bad. But once its there the only thing to help tendinitis is rest. All the treatment is good for it but as soon as you start doing the same action that caused it it will come back.

That's exactly what I've been told, repetative motion will undoubtedly repeat the same injury. My doc tells me there is a treatment that involves a rapidly vibrating device...(insert joke here)...treatment for this costs anywhere from $150 to $250 per session. Very costly for those who don't have medical plans in place.

Go figure, no medical plan here...rofl....

me too, had the carpal tunnel and tennis elbow, i wear a brace below the elbow when working and it seems to be okay, plus advil for inflammation, it lasted for about two months this winter,I've been about 4 months without pain. (knock on wood) hey iceman i know what you mean about looking at the procedure.
