Petrie Island's New Law's

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Petrie Island's New Law's

Post by jig head »

STAR: City plans to crank the heat this summer on rule breakers

Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll are alive at Petrie Island, which is why Ottawa Police and Ottawa Bylaw are cracking down on offenders there and in other parks across the east end.

There's way too much abuse of alcohol in parks," said Ottawa Police Const. Mark Cartwright. "If someone is caught smoking marijuana in a park, they'll be charged with trespassing. They're engaging in a prohibited act.

Ottawa Police and the bylaw department plan to crack down on extra-curricular activity at almost 20 east end city parks this summer, including Petrie Island and its new-found reputation as a makeout spot.

Police also came across several lone men arriving on Petrie Island after hours, who said they were out to see the beach. "It was too dark to see your hand in front of your face," Cartwright noted.

Under city rules, every park has an 11 p.m. curfew. Petrie Island is one of the exceptions, however. Its official closing time is 9 p.m. and takes in the entire island, starting at the far north end of the causeway that's an extension of Trim Road north of Hwy. 174.
In an attempt both to save the native wildlife on the island, and to solve the problem of dog owners who don't scoop their animal's droppings, Ottawa has banned dogs from Petrie Island.

So wut do you think ???

YEah the Canada Day celebrations are gonna bring out every family in Orleans... can't see that narrow dirt road mixing too well with thousands of people on foot  ... parking will be an issue too even with the new lot. Think I'll steer clear of that one.

On a lighter note, the city hired a waste management company who were working down there today filling dumpsters with 50 years worth of dumped crap from the island. Never seen such a huge pile of old tires before. Looks like they did a very thorough job. I'd hate to see what the island is going to look like after Canada Day celebrations though

I was there a few weeks ago with the wife and kid...

Must admit that there is a lot of beer drinking and a lot of drug smoking  The worst part about it is that they don't even try to hide the fact they are drinking or smoking.

I don't really care what they do but did bother me that there were so many small children 4-10 around them as they were smoking up. Hell one of the girls even had a baby.

I support the initiative because of the abuse but it's too bad it had to come to that.

The development of Petrie Island is the worst thing to happen in the east end in a long time. Instead of leaving the area to develop naturally and let wildlife remain wild, the city is overdeveloping Petrie. The beach is nothing more than a place where garbage is being left behind by ignorant suburban families and the recently advertised condo development will only serve to attract people who have no respect of the environement in which they will be living.

I remember Petrie island from 20 years ago. It may not have been pretty, and heavy machinery was around too much, but at least it was small and sustainable.

PF I have to disagree....
They have developed what will be a very pleasurable spot..wildlife was being pushed away already by city growth..as all wildlife has for the existance of man in any area you see a house or a buliding or a road.
The objective now is to clean it up and it is a spot the city is watching closely. It is cleaner there now than it was this time 3 years ago...and now they are trying to push away the druggies and badasses etc..to make it family friendly. Yes the beach has been a place for people to leave garbage etc..etc..but the iniative is to make that stop and it is being watch by the police for other activity more than we know.
I like the changes...and think it is good for the area.

I understand the need for rules when morons run wild in a public area.
But I for one will miss fishing down there at dawn, what with the Island changes and the (new) late opening of the launch!
Some of my fondest memories involve being down there at watching the sun come up!
Well and truly hooked!
