Followup On Hog's Back Ramp - Pics

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Followup On Hog's Back Ramp - Pics

Post by Leakyboot »

Darned threat of lightning kept me of the water today. Thought I'd run over to Hog'sBack to follow up on the ramp.

Turns out the "vandals" were Parks Canada themselves. They raised the price from $6.00 to $7.00. According to the young fella collecting, it's now $11.00 in total to launch and park.

I took a closer look at the ramp. You can see it better with shades on. It is still the same as it was when I last visited. However, if you can stay far away from the dock without falling off the edge of the ramp, it looks not too bad, For $11.00 to park on vacant land and use a ramp that's been hammered by ice for almost 35 years (see date inset bottom right of first shot) seems a tad userous. Maybe they have plans to rebuild.

Ramp is in worst condition closest to the dock.

Take care not to fall off the edge on the left. Shows as a dark area in bottom left. Easier to see with polarized shades.

I guess the old saying "you get what you pay for" does NOT apply to this launch...ugh!:?

Like many Federal departments and agencies, we at Parks have seen our budgets slashed drastically over recent years.

We are no longer financially able to maintain our assets, and in some instances the assets are being removed rather than have them deteriorate to a state where they present risks to the public. In other cases, fees are being increased slightly just to help recover costs. Without fee increases, the downward slide in facilities and services would only get worse.

Services are being scaled back continuously in several sites. Real sad to see this happen, but it appears things will get worse before they get better- if they EVER do.

I guess it's a "City" thing. Take a look at the new ramp at Arnprior to see what can be done.

CCB, I don't have any problem with user fees provided I see actual value for my money. ie. well maintained facilities. Perhaps there are plans to fix it up. Although, they really should be allowed, by Treasury Board, to budget to do the work first and 'then' charge recoup the investment.

If they are indeed going to pour a new ramp, then kudo's to them. If not. well.... :(
