Evindrude E-Tecs?

Post by BigSim »

I was wondering if anybody had any relevant info on the new Evinrude E-tecs.

I see they're much lighter, and oil injected, but has anyone seen/used one?

Does anyone know what this does to your boats HP rating?

I realize that alot of it has to do with speed, but the weight must be a factor too. The 1980something 20hp rude on the back of my v1468 widebody adds a heck of a lot of weight and she doesn't care to plane out quickly.

I wandered through the disgrace of a website evinrude put up for it, but it's basically a really big magazine add that told me very little relevant information.

How about cost? I don't know how rude stacks up to mercs for cost differeing but I know roughly how much mercs cost, are the rudes more? or less?

thanks.

BS

e-techs

Post by Haybay Larry »

Hey BS,
I like the fact that they come with 3 years no maintenance and winterizing the engine only requires a simple procedure.
I have no idea of pricing but they seem to be a good product based on what I have read....Larry

I have been looking at the new etec myself and went to evinrudes web site by bombardier and read some interesing info on the newest technology...it won 1st place awards for most outstanding performance in top end ,fuel economy, polution control,3yr 0 maintance required, and won over the four stroke industry issues...price don't know but can sure bet they will want a pretty penny for their new technology...
looking to price out a 90hsp if anyone has any info...?

A friend of mine got a 50hp etec in spring of 2005. He loves it. He says it is quiet, doesn't smoke and is good on gas. The price couldn't have been too bad as he is about the tightest person I know.
As far as weight goes, I checked the web sites for Yamaha & Evinrude and the weight of a 50hp 4 stroke Yamaha is 242 lb. and a 50hp etec is 240 lb. No significant difference.

Mercury Optimax, Yamaha HPDI and Evinrude e-tec are very similar in design principle as they are advanced fuel and emission efficient 2-stroke engineering. The e-tec are being promoted and marketed heavily in the industry to try and get a piece of the North American outboard market that is dominated by Yamaha and Mercury.

All of the motors on the market today are very well designed, I think the only difference to take into consideration is who is going to service the motor and is the shop or marina close to home and reputable in the industry.

:D Ya good point eye-tracker so that means if I own an etec I don't see a dealer for 3 yrs. Hmmmm not the same as merc or yamaha is it????
Sounds good to me. I have worked on mercs(opti) to many parts yamahas(copy cats no quite an etec) and Bomb/OMC (innovative) and the simplicity of their direct injection system is the best part. All work good and most will meet the higher emmision standards but it's the long run and I agree the shop you take it to. Do they have fully trained techs with experience or are they first year yard monkeys who want to be mechanics. I shouldn't put down the monkeys like that but as a consumer I can see it to be very difficult to get GOOD information instead of an anecdotal experiences when seeking out where to put their money when they want to purhcase or re-power their boats. Being aservice manager and having to train the techs I can say that there are only a handful of really good marine maechanics in this area. The pay and conditons are brutal and anybody waning to know my opinion on dealer mentality can pm me. I'm not going to get into a p&&*(&g match but the bottom line is always $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ to the dealer with the big credit line and boat line to go around.
How dependable are the engines?????? Pretty good these days it's the set-up that matters.
It's like this and it always has been, good word, HAS BEEN, as in HAS BEEN looked after, or HAS BEEN well maintained, it's like mint condition, if it left the dealers floor it's not in mint condition. Well maintianed motors keep running it's the ones that are run hard and put away wet that are the problem motors.
Dealers ADVERTISE THEIR SERVICE IF IT"S GOOD or not :?
BUT GOOD SERVICE SELLS ITSELF!!!!!!!!!!!
I can fix my own engine but if I couldn't and I did own a DFI engine these days and hadn't owned it from day one would definitely have it completely checked out
before the warranty runs out. They need proper break-in and proper maintenance, GOOD oil or the BEST you can AFFORD, no CT crap go to the dealer run an additive that inhibits carbon build-up, ie carbon guard, quickcleen if you use lower grade oil even if you don't it won't hurt remember to READ THE LABEL. Also these engines do not like SUSTAINED low rpm operation so WOT is recommended. :) I have had experience with DFI since 98 and find each maker improves with each season however I think Bomb and etec are going to the next level. I have a dvd I got from a dealer and the head to head comparison was good and I understand that this is just hype but the evidence is quite clear, my next motor will be an etec 200hp 60 degree V. Weighs 100 lbs lighter than any competitors. So my partner can bring his lunch now.
See you on the water.

After watching a short video on etec knowledge, Iam sold on this great performer in Johnson/evinrude. Omc Bombardier engineering.
One of the greatest unbelieveable features that impressed me was when they showed the clip on the oil injected reservoir running out of oil as they had purposely cut the oil line, and ran it until the warning light came on ...the motor is engineered to shut down to a lower rpm, and cruise at low speed for over an hour,or more, with no damage to the engine and could get a guy back home to the dock...Ps....It blew yamaha, merc (4 stroke tec) out of the water as well in this video, and after a 2 mile stretch ,lead the others by a 1/4 mile down the stretch.
the race was on ,to size up who came out on top , Beautiful machine...
Where did you buy your 90 hp?Muskyman?
