Good 'ol Blakeney

Post by Bass assassin »

Headed out to Blakeney with a buddy Wed morning to try for some smallies. I took the flyrod to test out my skills in preparation for the trip to Vermont. Haven't tried the flyrod for awhile. Not long after tying on a white popper I was into a load of smallies and rock bass. Had a great time. Caught about 2 dozen fish..all were dinks except for one about 8 inches :D  Seems my buddy caught the big ones with his crank baits  . Had to get out early to get back into town by 10:30. Wanted to explore the pools east of the bridge a little since the water levels are down and maybe next time make our way to the back pools. Still finding the black wooly buggers not producing. Must try to tie a few beaded olive buggers.

Lots of fun on the fly, eh?

Regarding the wooly buggers, size and presentation might be the problem.

Sometimes a small WB wortks better than a larger one does. It's really a matter of trying sizes to see which one they want. Weight is important based on fish depth and water flow rate.

Presentation is critical based on what it is you are trying to imitate. A slow and lazy retrieve works well in areas where the water is slow and leeches are an important food item. In faster water, you might use one to imitate a baitfish.

There are no hard and fast rules to fishing wooly buggers and I believe most of us have our own take on what works best for us.

BTW - I envy you because you're going to VT....it's a beautiful state. Enjoy the trip and catch lots of fish!!!
Time's fun when you're having flies.

BA,

#6 Olive beadhead (or tungston head depending on depth/flow) WB.
#4, #6 Outcast Crayfish have been working well too.

BA,

We managed to hit Blakeney for the second time this season on Saturday. I figure the water is still a little high (in terms of fishing the tailouts) but the bite was great. I'm guessing it had at least 4 dozen SM while my wife had at something like 30, with her best being a nice 13" SM from the lower pond.
