salmon river, new york state
I went down to New Nork state today. The water on the salmon river is still very high. I fished just above Chasm Falls, where the water was a bit slower. While I didn't catch a thing, the weather was great. Talking to the locals, they say the water levels should be better in a couple of weeks. The hills still had a fair amount of snow on them, so when that melts, things should look better.
Here's the scoop on north NY rivers from a guy with 25 years experience fishing Northern NY
The main rivers: Salmon, Saranac, Ausable etc. usually are quite fishable (fly fishing) by mid May or May long weekend. Some of these rivers experience alot of winterkill and often the cupboard is bare before the DEC stocks each stream in spring. There are wild and holdover trout but finding them takes some doing. As far the annual stocking, the DEC delays stocking because the snowmelt is quite acidic and mortality rates on stocked trout would be high.
Select smaller brooks and tributaries with wild and native populations are ready right now as are most trout ponds. There are hundreds of miles of upland streams fishable right now. Today I caught a bunch of native brookies on a small creek in Jefferson County.
