Not happy with mercury

This is where it's all going on. One can ask for advice or general information or simply chew the fat about fishing tackle, tips, and locations.

Not happy with mercury

Post by FlyingDutchman »

Hi everybody

I was just wondering what other people think of mercury response.

I have been having this problem with my motor since May. I had two marines look at the engine and no luck in fixing it. The last place I took it two had hire someone to fix it and called other people for advice with no luck. With no other option they ask the mercury rep for help while he was in town. His response was no warranty not his problem.

I missed about a year worth of fishing, spent about $5000.00 trying to fix it.

Do you think I made a reasonable effort trying to fix it before asking mercury for help or do you agree with mercury?

If you go to a Mercury certified marina they will fix it. I use Andre Lalonde Marine an he's always fixed them right the first time.
Catch and release them all

It's a 2002 Pro Max 300 and the problem is hard to explain. It would top out anywhere from 5 mph to 78 mph. It would change every time you use it and most of the time it would smoke alot.

I'm pretty sure the last place I brought it too is mercury certified.

I just thought mercury would stand behind there product instead of saying not my problem.

I sympathize with you fully on your problem. I don't have a large outboard like you do (I have a 7.5 and a 4.5 HP), but my experience with getting motors fixed has been bad. My friend Kirk is a mechanic and he said to me that there is a 50/50 chance that one will get a motor fixed properly (when brought in to a commercial mechanic) and there is no guarantee that the price that is charged will be reasonable. In my case, I have learned to fix my engines myself based on a couple of interactive repair sessions with Kirk and my friend Bob. Because your motor is so large, it is much more complicated than a car engine and as a result one probably can't fix it oneself. One time I spent $600.00 on my 7.5 Hp motor and it didn't get fixed properly. So, like you, I was extremely pee pee off. I wish you the best of luck because if it's one thing that anyone can't stand, it's spending money to fix a problem with the end result being that the problem persists.

Hi lenb12

I'm not mad at the people trying to fix it. What I'm mad at is when they ask the mercury tech to help them to trouble shoot he said no.

Too bad to hear of your problems.
I would sent an e-mail to Mercury head office and ask them if the attitude of that sales rep is the attitude that Mercury would like represented to the public.
I had a co-worker get a lawyer to send a letter to Yamaha over an on-going problem that wasn't getting fixed. After the letter got sent the problem got fixed.
I have been taking my boat to Terry's Marine here in Brockville. I have nothing but good things to say about Terry and his service.

This is one my expereince..I went to a mercury dealer to fix a problem. He replaced one part. On receipt, it is mercury quicksilver part. However it's actually from Sierra. He overcharged me about a couple of hundred dollars.
